Public school dress code restrictions should be reduced for girls. Girls have very strict dress codes to abide by which makes them feel sexualized. The dress codes that schools put in place make shopping very hard for girls. The idea of boys being distracted needs to be overlooked.
Girls feel sexualized and objectified by the insanely strict dress codes. Girls fear that if they even slightly show a shoulder or bra strap that they will be ridiculed. All girls wear bras. That is a known fact so what is the big deal if a strap of one peeks out? Girls feel as though they are looked at sexually by everyone (students and administrators) when they are called out for their clothing being ¨distracting¨ just because they are wearing clothes that express their personality or are comfortable but have a noodle strap. “Distracting” is a very vague term because one person might think something is completely distracting (even in a good, complementary way) but somebody else might not even think anything of a certain clothing item. Who is to determine whether or not something is distracting. When girls are constantly called out it lowers their self esteem. It also is hard to see a boy with a potentially distracting piece of clothing and not get called out on it as a girl would.

With most of the clothes being catered to us, not typically fitting the school dress code, it makes choosing outfits difficult for girls. Girls either have to do extra work to search for rule abiding clothes or add clothing layers to non school appropriate clothing which can add heat and draw more attention because people are “distracted” by the curiosity of whether or not a dress or top has spaghetti straps. Lots of clothing shops have a minimal selection of what fits the rules of school dress clothes which also might mean that parents have to spend more money on clothes to purchase them from school appropriate
Lyn Mikel Brown from Colby College declared, “bodies become objects of adult interest and surveillance,” in regards to girls’ maturing bodies (“Home”). When girls’ figures mature, it gains the attention of adults to monitor and keep them covered. Girls could have worn some clothes they had before, but now their bodies have changed and adults notice. If they’ve noticed then so have other people. The adults at school force girls to change the way they dress to prevent any source of distraction when instead they should be teaching boys and staff not to objectify women (“Home”).
Dress codes are detrimental to a kids learning environment Dress codes are harmful to students' learning and should be taken away. Dress codes can target certain groups of people and cause inequality because it can limit certain clothes that are needed for religious or personal needs. Additonally, the students' clothes are not the problem and are not the thing distracting from kids learning. Dress codes end up taking time away from teachers and childlrens learning. Some may say that dress codes help childrens focus but all the evidence in this paper shows differently.
You need to cover your shoulders, you need call home, School dress code unfairly target girls because their attire can be more distracting to male teachers and students. But boys are not necessarily being taught not to harass their female peers. By taking a girl out of class on a hot day for wearing something too revealing you basically saying that a boy's education and focus is more important than ours, because we spend time out of class to go to the office to call home for a change of clothes or even be sent home.dress codes make girls feel terrible like our bodies are inappropriate and need to be hidden. The dress code make girls feel apologetic and guilty like we’re responsible for other people's hormones and lack of self control.
We all know the dress code very well, preventing us from wearing what we want and letting our real style shine through. Here at Kaneland, there are dress codes that I believe are not needed. For one, the girl’s shoulders are not supposed to be shown, but why is there such a huge deal about them? Is there something about shoulders that makes them so bad that you can’t show them? In the hallways of Kaneland High School there are girls who are wearing an item of clothing that goes against the code and told to change.
What if your middle school girl came home from school one day and told you that she had to wear boy’s gym shorts because the yoga pants she was wearing turned boys on. Well, this happened to a 13 year old girl for two days in a row at her school. Most schools in the United States have a dress code policy containing many rules for what kids have to wear. In the United States dress code has a very controversial background with many opinions for and against it.
School Dress codes do not allow students to completely express their individuality. Schools want students to be able to think for themselves and create a sense of who they are, but it is not easy when they are forced to abide by rules that take away from from that. It should be a place of expressing ourselves freely in a learning environment without having to worry about what we wear as an interfering issue. The fact that the school system cares more about the student dress code than their education is an issue in itself. Schools should promote dress code individuality because of religious aspects, mental health, and human experience.
School Dress Code is Sexist School dress code has gotten out of hand, limiting young girls and boys on what they can wear to school. Telling young women that they are distractions in class because of what they wear. Girls get sent home because of their outfits it makes it seem like the administration is not worried about whether or not they get an education. Many types of clothing d or that have such as leggings, low cut shirts, and shorts have been banned or have restrictions. It is hard to find clothes that meet all these requirements.
If they love their off the shoulder shirt so much they might just suffer with a detention every time they want to wear it. The difficulty and trouble of enforcing dress codes is also why we should not have one. Many people argue that dress codes teach professionalism and keep students safe. However, professionalism is taught in people's attitude not by what they wear.
Dress codes are a necessary aspect of school, and they help teenagers to focus more in school. Rules for how to dress prevent boys and girls from being distracted by fancy clothing. Often times, girls tend to focus on what other girls are wearing and how other girls may look super attractive or trashy. In addition, boys look at girls who are dressed in very releasing clothing. Whether the person is a boy or girl, both become distracted by revealing or poor clothing.
Teens should be able to wear clothes they want and not what the schools want. In the first place, teens should be able to express themselves in many ways. Having a dress code makes it so teens can’t fully express themselves through their clothes. Now people can and do express themselves many different ways but you can tell a lot from a person just from the way they dress.
Whether or not the dress code is specifically targeted at females, it feels like we are the ones suffering from it. It’s hard to say that men are affected by the dress code, when most stores don’t sell guys clothing that goes against dress code rules. One of the teachers at Glenpool Middle School said that the three inch rule (The rule in which straps on clothing have to be 3 inches or wider) is mainly there so bra straps don’t show, but realistically, a strap is just a piece of material. Some people think that the dress codes are important because boys might get distracted by shoulders and straps, but why should ladies let them see their bodies as objects?
Having dress codes can also be uncomfortable especially with changes in weather throughout the school year. Most dress codes involve long pants for the boys and skirts for girls. During warm summers it can get real hot wearing long pants and in the winter, the girls would not be comfortable wearing skirts in freezing temperatures. To pay attention in school you need to be comfortable in what you are wearing without distractions. There is also the burden and additional expense to parents with students wearing dress codes for school and the other clothes after school which could double family budgets.
Over the years more and more schools are adopting some form of a dress code, these dress codes are often implemented to focus more on education rather than fashion which has led to a lack of creative freedom, it is assumed that boys cannot control themselves, boys dress codes are more lenient than girls dress codes, and so many other problems. All of these problems come from three major issues regarding dress code, which is sexism, dress codes are considered more important than education, and the overall affects dress codes have on students. According to Merriam Webster, dress code is formally or socially imposed standards of dress. Dress codes cause a number of problems in schools throughout the world and all of these problems stem from the fact that school systems use dress codes in order to make the focus more on education. In the end dress codes end up doing quite the opposite.
As a boy grows, so does his maturity. A girl’s clothing isn’t distracting and it doesn’t keep males from learning. At South Orange Middle School a girl was dress coded, was sent mass amounts of email, and embarrassed by the principal. However, it can save money and in school settings reduce social conflict and peer pressure that may be associated with the appearance. As a boy grows, so does his maturity.
School dress code isn’t just a list of clothes you can and cannot wear, it’s a violation of your First Amendment rights. Dress code is a set of guidelines in reference to clothing. Most schools use different dress codes, but they are very common throughout the United States. Dress code is said to be used as a way to protect students in schools, but dress code is used for many different things, it can be a good thing, and it can also be a bad thing. To begin, dress code is typically a set of rules that gives a detailed list to what you can and can not wear.
