Dropping The Atomic Bomb: Necessary Or Justified?

On August 6th and 9th the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Days later when Japan surrendered, WWII ended as well. This bombing sparked many debates over whether America’s actions were right or not. The fewer amount of casualties and the brutal harshness of the Japanese to others justifies the US's strategy. The atomic bombs changed the way we fight wars and was a key milestone to where we are now. The decision to unleash them to the Japanese was not a light choice but it was necessary to preserve democracy and the American people.

Imagine that there is a decision to be made to launch the atomic bomb or not. The bomb was launched but was it justified? Years ago during WWll, a scientist Albert Einstein sent a letter to the president. It said that Germany was creating a bomb that would cause major destruction and the United States had to make one as well. Scientists started making the bomb and it became the Project Manhattan. Soon the U.S was attacked by Japan. The President then decided to drop the atomic bomb to end this war and quickly. The use of the atomic bomb on Japan was justified because it ended the war, was a better alternative than the others given, and helped save lives.

In the twentieth century, the United States dropped two atomic bombs, which were the most powerful weapons at that time, on Japan. It happened on August 6 and August 9, 1945. The atomic bombs killed 226,000 Japanese and ended the war. However, America should not have dropped the atomic bombs for two reasons. First, it was not necessary to drop the bomb to win the war militarily or to get the Japanese to surrender. Second, America dropped the bomb not to win the war and save American lives, but to show its power to the Soviet Union.

Dropping a nuke on a country can cause lots of difficulty. The Americans dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was the most controversial topics in American history. Truman was the active president who made the final decision for this act. Many people believe that Truman made the correct decision while others are in complete disagreement with the decision. President Truman made the correct choice in dropping the atomic bomb because it showed the United States had power, it helped end the war quickly, and saved many lives.

The reason they say that Truman decided to drop the atomic bombs was so that they could try to get ahead of the Soviet Union. Gar Alperovitz is one of the most popular advocators for this reason. He stated that Truman dropped the bombs to demonstrate the power of America, and so that Russia could not enter the war to get new territorial acquisitions. If the Soviet Union was allowed to enter the war, then they could get some of the Japanese assets in China, which would have favored Russia greatly. Alperovitz’s conclusion was that Truman did this “to convince the Russians to accept the American plan for a stable peace”(Harry). Sure, Truman may have realized that he might be able to “put down” the Soviet Union and force the Japanese to surrender, sort of a kill two birds with one stone. However, implying that this was the impelling reason for President Truman wanting to drop the bomb is absurd. Two major pieces of evidence used in this argument are the fact that the Soviet Union’s entry into the war almost certainly pressured the Japanese into surrender, and that General Dwight D. Eisenhower asked Secretary of War Henry L Stimson personally to not drop the bomb while at Potsdam. With the Soviet Union’s entry into the war, it was only likely that Japan would surrender. If they didn’t, that would still lead to Operation Downfall, and that was not an option President Truman wanted. To counter the claims that Eisenhower objected to the bomb, Barton Bernstein, a Stanford History Professor, dug through all of the historical evidence and journals from the Potsdam conference, and concluded that “this kind of conversation with Stimson never occurred and that Eisenhower never said or even implied that the bomb should not be dropped”(Harry). Japan planned to expand their land and gain resources- which led them to invade China whom was an ally of the U.S. In result, the United States cut off the supply of oil to Japan. On December 7th 1941, Japan’s air force did a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor because that is where their military base is located. Afterwards, the United States declared war on Japan, and joined allies against the axis powers. The United States’ use of the atomic bombs is justified because it saved American lives; Japan was given fair warning, and their aggressions towards the U.S.

Many people believe this to the only truth but, the real truth is that dropping the atomic bomb was a necessary evil we had to use in order to win the war in World War II and future wars to come. It save many american soldiers lives, stopped the Soviets from joining, and helped us win against Japan.

There were three arguments that usually marshalled against the use of the atomic bomb. The first reason was the bombing of Japan was considered to be racist, the second reason was that it was pointless, and the third reason was because it was done purely for political effects and had more to do with the Soviet Union then the war in the Pacific. The bomb was dropped because the American wanted revenge because many Americans died because of the Japanese. Hundreds of thousands of Americans were killed and wounded from the years of ghastly firebombing. They also decided to drop the bomb was because they wanted to compare if the uranium or plutonium type bomb was stronger, so they dropped the uranium bomb in Hiroshima and the plutonium bomb in Nagasaki.

Try putting yourself in president Truman’s place how would you have dealt with Japan? Make a treaty or just try and completely destroy them? The U.S. and president Truman had a very hard decision to make dealing with Japan. Although there was several reasons to not drop the atomic bomb, the U.S. had good reason for the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which were justified due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, to keep the nation safe, and to stop the Japanese empire from becoming any stronger.

Theoretically of course, what if a country was to develop a weapon strong enough to completely disintegrate cities and all the people living in it? Coincidently, the United states discovered a bomb that did exactly that and ended up thrusting the world into a new era of weaponized technology towards the end of World War II. Countries from this point on became wary of opposing the United States, aware of the power they possessed, especially since the US had already used this weapon on Japan to end the war. However, the Japanese were committed to fight to the bitter end of the war and see it all the way through, regardless of the fact that the United States demanded unconditional surrender from the small country of islands. This further emphasizes that since the Japanese were not simply going to give up, Truman came to the conclusion that in order to save millions of lives, he had to take thousands. As all the world has known, the biggest atomic bomb in warfare history by the end of World War 2 is the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima that hit on August 9th, 1945 by the direct order of our 33rd president of The United States Of America; Harry S. Truman. He thought this bomb would bring a close ending of the war (World War 2) and it definitely did but it was too much to handle afterwards when it hit. There was no choice for Truman because there was no other way to bring the war into a close. It was the last call, but they didn’t realize that after they released the bomb, it was hard to decide whether it was a mistake or the right decision. The bomb killed innocent people of 199,000 (plus more). The atomic weapon destroyed most parts of the a Japanese town of Nagasaki and Hiroshima .
