Dutch Schultz was an infamous gangster, bootlegger and murderer who became a powerful figure in the New York crime world earning the nicknames “Beer Baron of the Bronx” and “The Dutchman.” He also expanded to illegal gambling and clashing with rival gangsters such as Legs Diamond and Vincent Coll. On top of all of these crimes, he would get in violent gun battles with the police. Dutch Schultz was one of the most violent gangsters in the 1920’s, but is not as well known as others.

Soon after his release, Schultz returned to his violent criminal ways by going back to the streets and joining his gang of thugs once again. Soon his associates would give him the nickname “Dutch Schultz”, which he would hold for the rest of his life being one of the most feared criminals of New York. It was in the 1920’s when Schultz turned to bootlegging and became associated with violent local gangsters such as Legs Diamond and Lucky Luciano. Schultz then bought a partnership in an illegal saloon. Soon after, Schultz formed a gang of his own with a fellow criminal Joey Noe. The two of them would build together an illegal business selling beer in New York, intimidating anyone who wouldn’t buy from them. Schultz even went as far as kidnapping and then torturing a man who wouldn’t buy their booze. The group was going well so the two decided they would expand their operations from the Bronx to Manhattan, but this decision would lead to a brutal territorial battle with Legs Diamond. Diamond’s gang started to take Schultz’s liquor shipments which made Schultz very unhappy. In October 1928, Noe was shot and killed by a member of Diamond’s gang. Schultz was then in search for nothing but power and wealth. Schultz got into violent battles with many other gangsters as well, including Vincent Coll. In the 1930’s, The two clashed in a vicious gang war which led to many deaths in both gangs until Coll was eventually killed by members of Schultz’s gang in February 1932. Schultz continued to grow larger with the goal of becoming the best criminal there ever was with his bootlegging operation. He thought he was doing well for himself so he decided to add illegal gambling to his criminal record. Schultz would get his gang to operate slot machines and run a policy racket. At this time Schultz was attracting too much attention upon himself to authorities. Schultz eventually was indicted on a tax charge in 1933. But he remained hidden from authorities until he decided to surrender in November 1934. In his first case, it ended with a hung jury and in the second one he was acquitted. Machine Gun Kelly was a bootlegger, bank robber, and a kidnapper. It didn’t take long before he was infamous across the whole nation. He was well renown along with Al “Scarface” Capone, George “Baby Face” Nelson, and many other gangsters during the prohibition era. George “Machine Gun” Kelly can be considered one of the most famous gangsters from the 1930’s. Machine Gun Kelly’s real name was George Kelly Barnes.
Albert DeSalvo was born September 3, 1931 in Chelsea Massachusetts. Albert had a very rough upbringing, his father was an alcoholic and wife beater. He also had four siblings. In his early years he was in and out of prison for crime and violence. He also had a history of breaking and entering.
He murdered his first victim at twenty and in order to escape charges he fled to Chicago where he quickly found one of the most notorious gangs, 5 Points Gang. He with his charm, clever speaking skills, and obedience to the leader he quickly moved up the ranks until he was Johnny Torrito’s (the gang's leader) right hand man. Johnny however had to flee the country and Al took the opportunity naming himself leader. He quickly became the number one in bootleg operations of Chicago, while wiping out any rival providers. These rival gangs however were not pleased with Capone’s success and did all they could in attempts to wipe him out, among the attempts were poisoning and machine gun ambushes, none of which seemed to work.
Trying to raise funds to support his mother he started working for lower level gangsters. When he was 17 he was arrested for burglary and served 17 months in Blackwell island prison. Dutch began to bootleg at first he did it for small bars in the area. But he eventually started a huge empire in New York bootlegging
In October 1935, Schultz insisted on putting a hit on Dewey, who was leading an all-out effort to put the mob out of business. The syndicate board overruled Schultz; they felt that killing law enforcement officers would bring too much heat. They feared – with good reason – that Dewey's murder would inflame public outrage to new heights and result in an even greater campaign to shut down the rackets. Schultz vowed that he would ignore the board's decision and kill Dewey himself.
Capone was smart about how he appeared in the public and in media he always wore suits and pulled it off by acting like a respectable businessman. Capone had a secret bootlegging trail from Chicago to New York. This trail made Capone more money than he ever dreamed of. But during a one of the bootlegging runs McSwiggen got shot and killed by one of Capone’s henchmen. Nobody got convicted due to lack of evidence.
During the 1920’s gang related crime was a serious issue. The leader of all this violence and corruption was a man named Al “Scarface” Capone (“Al Capone”). This organized crime, dehumanization, and corruption, became the ultimate image of Chicago for people throughout the world. He was largely immersed in things like gambling, prostitution, and the illegal sale of liquor. He was not convicted for any of his crimes, even the St. Valentine's Day massacre of 1929, until he was imprisoned for tax evasion (Horan).
George “Bugs” Moran: American Gangster George “Bugs” Moran was born on August 21, 1893 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His real name was Adelard Cunin, with George Moran being one of his most famous criminal aliases(BugsMoran.net). While many believe he was of Irish descent, he was actually Polish. He was born into a family of Polish immigrants and while his mother was very kind to him, Moran’s father was very strict towards him.
Alphonsus Capone or Scarface was one of the most notorious gangsters of the 1920's and 1930's. He is most well-known for the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Capone started off as bartender in Brooklyn working for Frankie Yale and later became the boss of one of the most successful mobs in Chicago. He headed the organized crime gang called the "Chicago Outfit. " Capone was one of the most successful mobsters; he headed one of the largest organized crime gangs and managed to never get involved in the crime himself.
These terrible intimidating men were a part of the mafia. The mafia, caused by dark times in America and corrupt police force, was a very influential group to America and lead to many deaths and a hurt America. The Mafia was a group of “families” that ran most of the big cities in the 1920’s. These men came from Italy and migrated over to America.
During the 1920s studies reveal that there was more bootleggers sold by crime lords across America, some of the main bosses were Al Capone, Frankie Yale, Giovanni Torrio, and Big Jim Colosimo. These bosses while they crime bosses they did some good, like reembursing store owners robbed, and they were family men. They also did terrible things, while most of the bosses hired people to kill people, some of them did the killing themselves. Big Jim Colosimo is related to Giovanni Torrio by via marrying Torrios aunt. Big Jim was the first boss of the Chicago Outfit.
He started his bootleg business very young, he started to build up his business to become more successful This did cause some of his men to die or get injured very bad. Al Capone and his men did not cooperate with the police. But they did not care Al Capone was the best man there was in there eyes. They also did not want to get on his bad side. If they did they were destined to die.
They lined up seven victims in front of a wall and gunned them down. Capone was arrested many times after this incident. In 1931 he was sentenced to eleven years in prison for tax evasion. He had a hard time in prison.
