I am a dynamic leader. That is a bold statement to make and refers to my leadership style. Dynamic supportive and dynamic assertive are two different types of leaders. My leadership style is dynamic supportive with humility, enthusiasm, and empathy as my virtues. Charismatic, reliable , gentle, confident and strong-willed, all of these words describe dynamic supportive leaders. Dynamic supportive leaders have difficulty saying “no,” need to prioritize their commitments better. There are disadvantages to this particular leadership style. We tend to be procrastinators, can become lethargic, suffer from depression and become lazy. On the upside we are sensitive to the needs of others, great conversationalists, and best friends. I have been described as a strong willed individual throughout my life, but did not realize that I could apply it to my leadership style. Since I am a special education teacher, I deal in a world of paperwork, law and deadlines. A colleague that I work with tried to get me to compromise my ethics to accommodate them. I did not go along with what was asked of me since it would was wrong. After reading about dynamic supportive leadership I had a better understanding of why I react the way I do. One of the descriptors is reliability. When a colleague asked me to assist with a technology question, I was able to help them through frustration. Not all leadership styles are the same, especially when supporting different messages. A perfect example would be Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, as both were great leaders of the Civil Rights Movement but both supported different ideas, and with different ways of supporting those ideas. In his “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington in 1963, Dr King had a very optimistic and inspirational tone. He used things like imagery to support the idea of reaching racial equality through integration instead of segregation. Dr. King grew up living in a very loving and stable home.
Follow the leader, a.k.a. do what the first person does and don’t do it wrong or you are out. This becomes burnt into children’s minds as what they think leadership is and has become what many people think it must be. Contrarily, a flourishing leader is one who listens. Who takes all member’s ideas into consideration, makes sure all are heard, and keeps a group in order while still taking into account what the group wants.
I believe I uphold the leadership characteristics that name a successful leader as well as mentors I have worked with. Additionally, a leader is not born, they are taught. Leadership is gained through experience. Flexibility is a part of leadership because you need to adapt
Supportive leadership consists of being friendly and approachable as a leader and includes attending to the well-being and human needs of subordinates (Northouse cited in Sikandar Hayyat Malk ,2012). Supportive leadership is effective as leader offers a wide range of rewards to subordinate such as encouragement, pats on the back, and respect. ( Sikandar Hayyat Malik 2013) Supportive leadership is a leader will rather used the take and effort to help the employees understand their strengths and weakness so that they could improve on doing their task. Charismatic leadership is a leadership style that is identifiable but may be perceived with less tangibility than other leadership styles. Often called a transformational leadership style, charismatic leaders inspire eagerness in their teams and are energetic in motivating employees to move forward. The after excitement and commitment from teams is an enormous asset to productivity and goal achievement. The negative side of charismatic leadership is the amount of confidence placed in the leader rather than in employees. This can create the risk of a project or even in an entire organization collapsing if the leader leaves.

This course has also expanded on different aspects of adaptive leadership such as: disequilibrium, diversity, running experiments, and the four KLC competencies of civic leadership. Two of the biggest takeaways I have gained through course are being able to tell a technical problem from an adaptive problem, and learning of the four KLC competencies. My ideas of ideal leadership were very basic and elementary when I first began this course. I was very stuck on trait theory and the functional approach as most people think that leaders are born and not made, and that by completing tasks a leader would do then you are looked at as being a leader. The classroom is where a student is meant to develop their curiosity about the world, as well as their willingness to make a change; it is where the youngest of our society are meant to acquire the knowledge that will be the basis for their future career paths and general competency as citizens of the world. Considering the shortcoming of the Georgian public school system, such as the memorization-based nature of the curriculum, the inadequate textbooks, and underenforced educational training, education is where I would fight for reforms. If I were given the opportunity to hold a leadership position and help my country, my position would be in the ministry of education where I would fight for the aforementioned reforms.
