To Write Well or to Not Write Well In the article The Writing Revolution by Peg Tyre, the far too common unfortunate example of a school system failing to equip its students with the proper writing skills necessary to be successful students is examined. While this failure is a phenomenon that ails students worldwide, I was fortunate enough to receive a high school education that excelled in this area and helped prepare me for college and beyond. The first method my school used was to assign mandatory writing assignments every week, which forced me to practice repeatedly and prefect the skill. Additionally, on each assignment my teachers provided me one-on-one meetings to discuss the paper content, which allowed me to receive personal feedback
In college, we start to understand that this knowledge is not enough as to write flawlessly, you need to know more than just the structure of the essay and the ways to use resources in your writing. In this article, we are going to discuss essay writing habits that we acquire in school but that have nothing in common with high-quality writing. Moreover, we will give you several recommendations on how to turn these ineffective habits into the effective ones. Never paying attention to the subject of the essay
Critical thinking is like a muscle, you have to work it out over and over before it gets strong. Passively learning the material will only get you so far, as we have discussed in LSC 101. I need to make sure that I am actively engaging in the classroom, this will allow me to flex my critical thinking muscle on a daily basis. Besides not actively engaging in most of my classes in highschool, I could get away with writing papers the night before and not studying at all for math tests, that is a bad habit I need to drop. When I look at it now, I can see that it was because of a lack of pressure.
English 1121 has made me realize that the audience has to be put into perspective while writing. In other writing classes in high school, I would write a paper for the purpose that I basically had too, never even thinking about an audience. I learned that with every paper I wrote I had either a different audience or a different goal. With an audience involved, I learned that I had to keep my word choice in mind. Being proper and always having a college level academic tone when writing was something that was very important.
To be honest I tried to avoid the class at first time, even though we have to do writing in other classes. I felt I am not ready for writing class. However, I decided to enroll to this class because it will be very helpful to improve my writing, and the readings will be good references when I start writing my dissertation in the end of this program. It was good choice and I am glad I registered for this class. The readings are very useful and filled with information that help you overcome your fear of writing.
A lot of teens feel like they are isolated from people in school because they fear either that they don't fit in or their classmates don't like them for some reason. They can use the book as something to help them get through things they are going through. Getting told how their lives are going to be planned out for them is a big struggle for some young adults Equality goes through the same thing. “We see that it has ever been thus and that is has brought us step by step to our last” (Rand 20). This quote is basically saying that their life completely planned for them.
From the time students reach junior high, they’re constantly told that they’re supposed to know what their plan is after high school. Many students who don’t have a plan, are constantly reminded that they need to have their whole life figured out before they graduate high school. In “College Pressures” by William Zinsser, the author brings the issues of education systems to light and the unintended stress being brought upon students as a result. Having a deeper insight into his students academic fears, Zinsser uses this to his advantage by connecting to his readers. To better articulate the pressures put onto students, the essay transitions into letters of hopeless students slipped under the dean’s door at 4 A.M. Students who have papers, assignments, and tests all due the next day are full of fear and anxiety that their grades won’t be what they’ve imagined.
Over the this past semester in freshman composition I have learned how to write a college level paper. Going into this class, I was a little unsure and scared that I wasn’t going to be able to do the things that were required for me to do. As the semester passed I could definitely see a change in my writing. I learned how to use the appropriate punctuation, how to write and refute an argumentation paper, which I believe is my strongest piece of writing and how to research and gather information to write a strong research paper. I knew coming into this class that I was going to struggle with my punctuations, word choice, and the overall flow of the paper.
My “threshold guardian: was most likely myself and my fears. At first, it took me a while to accept my responsibilities and get over my fear of failing and getting nowhere. Now that I am within the “unknown” there are many challenges that I face every day and will continue to face. There is the challenge of finding out what I want to study in college, doing well on standardized tests, and getting good grades in all of my classes. There are also temptations I have to face such as choosing whether to hang out with friends or do the homework that is due the next day.
I think without the knowledge from this class I would not have done as well as I did on that paper. That is why I am grateful for this class because it helps me write papers for others classes and do well. In the end, Dual English Comp has caused me a lot of stress but it has also opened my mind up to writing a successful college paper. I learned new things from writing a thesis to the correct apostrophe positions, to how to cite things correctly. My high school English class never taught me any of the things I have learned in here, so now I can proudly say when I go off to college that I know how to write a college academic essay because of Dual English
