ENG10050 – Shakespeare Problem Questions
1. As both characters use very different sounding language (Helena’s declarations of love versus Demetrius’ declarations of disgust), how can the mood of this passage be determined?
2. Could the mood of this passage be considered tragic because Demetrius is “sick” at the sight of Helena? or even comical due to Helena’s dogged insistence to never leave Demetrius alone even though he repeatedly claims, “I do not, nor I cannot love you.”
3. When Helena says about women – “We cannot fight for love as men can. We should be perused and courted. We weren’t made to do the courting”. What do Shakespeare’s views of women seem to be from what she says at the end of the passage?
4. How does figurative language
An example of figurative language the author uses in Ender 's game is metaphors. A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things. These figure of speeches are used throughout Ender’s game. For example, the author uses a heavy metaphor thought by Valentine when she saw the
The author uses figurative language to strengthen the poem by adding more detail. He explains what things feel like, sound like, look like, and even taste like. Without figurative language the writing would be boring and short.the imagery describes how the setting looked and gave the reader more knowledge. In the poem “Oranges” by Gary soto the boy has an orange in his hand and describes it as fire in his hand. Constructed response
Again they are deliriously in love because of the love drug. In the beginning of the play neither of the males want anything to do with Helena, she is blindly chasing after Demetrius desperate for his attention, but he brushes her off. Oberon orders puck to put the spell on Demetrius. “Thou shalt know the man by the Athenian garments he hath on.” (II, i ln 42 & 43)
Figurative Language can help improve a story because it helps you visualize the story and help engage the reader into the
It is important that we recognise the figurative speech because they set the
It’s no surprise, that Shakespeare’s Macbeth was clearly constructed as a rebellion against femininity roles of the time. During the Elizabethan era, women were raised to believe they were inferior to men since men obtained desired masculine qualities such as strength, and loyalty, whereas women were viewed as figures of hospitality (1; 6; 28-31). Obviously, not being tempted by the luxury of subservient women, William Shakespeare rebuked this twisted belief, applying that women deserve more respect than their kitchen tables.
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, love and hate fall hand-in-hand. The oxymoron “This love feel I, that feel no love in this” demonstrates the sensation of love burning in Romeo, whilst annexing a mention of his struggle that Rosaline, the woman he seemingly loves, doesn’t reciprocate the same affection, indicating a prime example of a darker side to love (1.1.187). The oxymoron divulges a contradictory issue arising internally in Romeo. Shakespeare’s utilization of these oxymorons reveal that Romeo’s love indeed comes from an enemy family of his. As much as Romeo desires a perfect love life, his feelings of endearment perpetually battle with the supposed feelings of hate.
Figurative language is a big part when it comes to writing. It helps make the poems or whatever the type of writing is, come alive. There are numerous types of figurative language, also. The author usually uses figurative language to allow the reader to understand the writing better.
Writers in the Victorian age used very extravagant figurative language because in that day and age, you could not take a picture of something to show the reader someone or something, so they had to describe it, and the figurative language helps with that. For example, without figurative language, the reader couldn’t see how Scrooge works his employees too hard, and pays them so little, but with the metaphor, the reader could see Scrooge and his personality
He does not care at all about her even though in the past they had a relationship. Later on Demetrius even threatens, to leave Helena alone in the dangerous forest, warning her "I’ll run from thee and hide me in the brakes and leave thee to the mercy of wild beasts.(2-1-234-235)" Demetrius did not care about Helena and was willing to leave her alone in the woods even if there was a possibility she gets killed by beasts. Demetrius threatens her again in a more cruel manner by telling Helena "If thou follow me, do not believe but I shall do thee mischief in the wood. (2-1-243-244)" Demetrius’s intent was trying to intimidate Helena by saying that he will physically harm her if she does not leave him alone which shows how insensitive he can be. At the start of the play Demetrius was very cruel and insensitive as he did not care about Helena 's feelings or if she died or not but subsequently
The strong effects of love makes Helena a bit foolish and blind in the ways she reacts to it. In scene one of act one, the readers learn that Helena still loves Demetrius even though he loves her friend, Hermia, now. When Helena is first introduced, she demonstrates her jealousy and insecurities by asking Hermia for some of her beauty to win Demetrius back. Hermia and Lysander inform her that they are running away, and that
Each sex has its’ specialty, both sexes must be equal; people in general must be equal. By studying Shakespeare and by going deeper through analyzing and getting preoccupied with, we learn how to “brainstorm” the people, the culture and the ethics of that era and create opinions and thoughts about those centuries. In my opinion, Shakespeare is a modern, a contemporary artist and writer of his era who “sends” and passes messages through his plays. Each one of us, the readers and learners of Shakespeare, creates a special, unique opinion about Shakespeare and literature in general. We do not all think in the same way, people are unique.
