I am interested in participating in the "6 Degrees of Influence: Understanding the Interconnectedness of Earth Systems" research project because I have a deep appreciation for interdisciplinary programs. I am genuinely interested in this particular research program because this unique model exposes students to the role liberal arts plays in STEM research. Furthermore, this exposure to STEAM is complimented by the opportunity to conduct research and connect the research project to global issues. I would appreciate the opportunity to expose myself to earth science and gain knowledge on the different ways earth science impacts my community and other communities as well. I will use the information I gain from this program to encourage my peers
For example, Jacqueline Haymond and Donal Hook, two members of Clemson University’s Department of Forest Resources complied research with William Harms of the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service on the impact Hugo had on forest management throughout the state in their Hurricane Hugo: South Carolina Forest Land Research and Management Related to the Storm. The individuals that really care about this project are those from the high schools, community, and organizations. As its importance has spread farther then the Jordan River Council it is important that they involved stay involved, and can see the project to its
I understood at a young age that success only comes through hard work and perseverance. My father always said that to be successful in college it takes 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. My collegiate studies at the University of Arizona have provided a firm foundation in knowledge on conserving our natural resources. Pursuing a Master’s degree will help increase my understanding to the next level and discover novel solutions to impending natural resource
pronouns along with the strengths and weaknesses that I possess. In the “Annotated Bibliography: Film Studies and Video Production”, I included the format for an annotated bibliography with the MLA 8th edition citation before the summary paragraph, rhetorical analysis, and genre analysis. In the “Astronomy Discourse Community Examination”, I incorporated interview responses about the 6 aspects of a discourse community into my essay; I included personal experiences and knowledge of the Astronomy discourse community from my interviewee and also included their credibility to the discourse community. When researching for scholarly reviewed article on film, I used the University Library research browser to find academic journals; at first I had done research on magazine articles about Netflix Original Series “Luke Cage”. Later, I realized that these were not fitting for this assignment, I returned to the University Library search base and searched for academic articles
This potentially saved many people’s lives and the future for Earth. Along with “Going Green”, humanities also influenced the
While the humanities lens emphasizes the present and the future impacts of climate change on human values, the historical lens emphasizes the past and how human activity has contributed to climate change. The humanities are concerned with the human response to climate change and how it affects human well-being, while history is concerned with the evolution of human impacts on the environment. By examining my topic through these two lenses, I have gained a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of climate change and its impact on humanity. I have learned that climate change is not just a scientific issue but also a human issue that affects every aspect of our lives. Regarding the similarities and differences in how the lenses relate to my topic, the similarity is that both lenses provide a perspective beyond the scientific aspects of the topic.
My grandmother instilled a love for the Earth within me when she taught me how to garden. This passion grew as I matured, causing me to delve into reading and learning about the environment to understand how to help it. The Scoop would allow me to even further integrate my love for the environment into my daily life. Furthermore, I’m an extroverted person, so it’s very important for me to have an active social life. Wellesley teaches everyone the importance of strong connections between students for personal growth and unity; thus, The Scoop would allow me to create meaningful connections with students who share my passion for the environment.
Additionally, I offer a unique invasion ecology perspective, particularly as it relates to biodiversity and conservation issues. It is my goal to prepare students (whether they pursue careers in the sciences or other disciplines) to evaluate and test hypotheses, to reason quantitatively, to communicate effectively, to appreciate the diversity of perspectives and motives surrounding complex problems, and to become citizens capable of informed decision-making on local and global environmental issues. George Mason University is located in close proximity to a number of natural areas (Rock Creek Park, SERC, various branches of UMCES, Wye Island National Resource Management Area, Chesapeake Bay), which would allow me to incorporate field activities in a range of urban, rural and natural settings within easy reach of campus. The university’s proximity to government agencies that deal with environmental science (EPA, USGS, NOAA, USDA) would also provide abundant opportunities to enrich my classes with speakers who conduct or apply environmental research in their careers. I also plan to incorporate my research results into lectures and class activities in order to give students a chance to work with real
The putrid smell of Escherichia coli is one that is immediately identifiable to the few lucky individuals who recognize its scent. It is also an aroma with which I became intimately sensitive to as I shuttled petri dishes of the bacterium in and out of an incubator. While my classmates shied away from the task of handling the pungent bacteria used in our recombinant DNA experiments, I took to the task eagerly, anything that would take me one step closer to my goal of researching. I had the opportunity to learn about lab techniques and cutting edge biology concepts the summer before my junior year, in an extracurricular biotechnology class at Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development. The class, a three week crash course in the
For this program at the University of Arizona a large emphasis is placed in the role soils play in the environut. It is therefore important to learn how soils work under different conditions and how to classify them. In my major I am doing an emphasis in Physics and Chemistry. In order to understand and do well in higher level classes it is important to have a good understanding of the basic chemical and mathematical concepts used in this field. This is a subject that builds upon itself and a strong foundations will facilitate the understanding of more advanced concepts.
The Keck Geology Consortium is dedicated to enhancing the diversity of future scientific communities and sharing our science with a broader audience. Please describe how you, based on your personal background and life experiences (including social, cultural, familial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges) will contribute to this mission during and after participation in a Keck research project. Six years ago, I made the life-changing decision to join my local 4-H club. At the time, I didn’t realize just how valuable this experience would be and what an impact it would have on my life.

There must also be recognition among stakeholders that each singular discipline, once integrated within an interdisciplinary framework of other disciplines, greatly increases the potential for collaboration, knowledge-building, and problem-solving when developing new approaches to environmental
As the result of my experience this semester I can conclude that this experience was a life changing experience. The way I viewed things in the past about the environment has changed. In the past I was not aware of the importance of living a more sustainable life. Also, how protecting our environment is one of the today’s most serious issues. Some of issues and information that I learned throughout this semester was the web life, food web, overpopulation, mutualism & commensalism, climate change, pollution, rainforest & sea destruction, and the extinction of many animals and plants.
