Work is the essence of life. It comes in all forms whether it is physical, spiritual or academic work. Even so, we all try to evade it, especially students. One of the most hated form of work a student can get is homework. Time and energy consumed performing this, and young student claim these resources are going to waste, but they do not now the sweetness that comes after fulfilling these bitter tasks. Homework may not always guarantee the students a good grade, but by doing them, they will build crucial soft skills such as time management, prioritization skills and discipline.
Almost every day in high school, teachers bombard students with assignments. In response, many students do not do it, maybe due to the fact that they do not have enough time to complete it all. It is true, the fact that teachers give piles of homework to be completed, and it can be overwhelming for the students. To the students, it is nothing more than a nuisance taking their time and that all they need is to work for the final exam for the grade, but that is not learning, in fact the point that has been missed out by those who think that way is that homework builds time management skills. Teachers put their students in tight schedules in order to get them to practice and flourish this critical skill. Time management is an important skill for an important nonrenewable element of life, which is something being over looked by many students these days, including students who are graduating from school
Assigning this type of “busy work” does not meet the individual's needs for students and what they may need more help learning. A homework assignment could be given but have no problems for possibly what half the class is struggling in. That type of homework does not contribute to academic success, and can actually lead to tearing students down. “No matter how successful we are at promoting that desire, there are still going to be many things in life that must be done even though they’re not particularly pleasant” (Kohn
Some teachers expect homework to be done on a computer, even if if a student does not have access to a computer. Homework creates unprecedented tension between students, teachers, parents, and coaches. In every instance of this condition, we have petitioned for change in the most humble terms. Our repeated petitions have been answered only by indifference and advice to straighten out our priorities.
Homework becomes very unpopular with the students. This is because homework is perceived by students to have taken their time away from school. Homework is also considered to stress students. Many of the teachers consider homework is very important given to students.
The school use to start at 9am and it gets over at 3pm and then there is a tutoring program which running from 5pm to 8pm. The homework isn’t to bad because sometimes the teachers make us do it during class time and working on the homework with friends as a team work use to be fun. In the article “Down With Homework” the author says “Overwhelms struggling kids and removes joy for high achievers” I disagree on this statement because homework is a part of confidence and helps us to improve in our daily basis studies and keeps us on track. The idea that overall about homework it helps children to learn better and give them a better understanding of what they are learning in the daily
Why Students Shouldn’t Have Homework There are around 365 days in a year, and in a school year, there are around 180 days. From the beginning of the school year to the end, the most common thing that students least like, is homework. Coming home after a long day of school, then having responsibilities to do at home, not to mention some students have after school activities which take up around 2 hours if not more. Homework for students is a barrier that makes it difficult for them to have any kind of social life, or spend time with their family. There are many reasons why students shouldn’t have homework, during this essay people will learn why having homework isn’t helping the student, except making things more difficult for them.
I learned in this activity how crucial time management skills will be to my ability to complete this course successfully. The analysis from the questionnaire (Table 2) as well as keeping a record of what activities I focus on for a couple of days, opened my eyes to a few areas of improvement. From the patterns observed I could see that most of my time was taken up by work and commitments as well as procrastination. Not being able to juggle theses successful led to irritation and was unproductive. Research suggests that managing ones emotions, being self-aware and self-motivate can be factors for success for a student (Allan, 2009).
Over recent years, the debate has gotten more attention as to whether students should have homework as homework has seemed to increase. Students having homework does not benefit them in their academic skills and should be abolished. In countries like Japan and Denmark, the students don’t have much homework, but exceed the United States on international tests. A lot of tests have proven that homework does not help improve a student’s performance of skills.
An average student would spend hours on schoolwork a day, which can be very stressful. A high school student will use half of their day around school relation. Almost all elementary to high school students will likely to agree that homework should not be assigned. The majority of students complain about homework yet teachers don’t usually understand why. While homework gives benefits to students, unnecessary homework should not be assigned due to the fact that there are enough school hours, it consumes time, and the development of poor health is encouraged.
The clock strikes 12:00 am and students are trying to finish their pile of homework due in the morning. Students are rushing to finish in order to get ready for the next day. Schools are assigning students a lot of homework, but the homework can do more harm than good. Negatively affect kids by sleep deprivation. Source of frustration and daily stress.
A lot of students disregard grades and homework because the homework gets too overwhelming and they just give up. Students get multiple hours of homework everyday and it becomes to much for a teen and that can cause other effects that interfere with sleeping, stress levels can get to high and can cause depression, and even make a kid give up on school. Therefor too much homework is not physically, mentally, or emotionally healthy for
To begin, a study showed that “High-achieving high school students said too much homework leads to sleep deprivation and other health problems such as headaches, exhaustion, weight loss, and stomach problems” (“Homework – Top 3”). For example, homework can cause kids to have a breakdown. It also causes worry about finishing an assignment on time. In my personal experience, homework has led to me getting frustrated and stressed. Kids, explicitly teenagers, have enough problems going on in their lives.
Almost everyday, students get buried with homework. The homework given is basically useless to many yet still taken for a grade. It is often believed that if homework is not taken for a grade anymore, then students will not do it causing them to score bad on their tests and their grades as a whole. However, in Dhahran High School Saudi Arabia, homework is counted as a learning behavior grade and not achievement. Due to this many do not do homework as often but study their own ways or work on their hobbies.
Homework is an on-going topic of debate that has been being questioned for decades. In my opinion, I don’t think that homework is essential to students due to the effect it has on your mental and eventually your physical health and it is starting to affect their school life. Is the amount of work we get actually helpful to students? Is it too much for students? How is homework affecting my child?
Everyone goes to school, everyone has homework. Homework has been a topic of interest for a very long time. Many students think that homework is not beneficial. However, without homework people wouldn’t remember what they learned in class. Homework gives kids the chance to prove what they have learned.
Above all, homework allows the students to gain responsibility, time-management, perseverance, and self-esteem. “The act of completing homework has benefits in terms of developing good habits in students.” This shows that, students are gaining many skills from homework. This also shows that, homework isn’t a waste of time and students do benefit from homework. “Homework also teaches students how to problem solve, think independently, and build an understanding and interest for the issues in our society.”
