Eats, Shoots, & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss takes place in the modern day twenty-first century. It’s an informative book that teaches you basic grammar rules, examples of when to utilize them, and incorrect ways of applying them into your writing .Truss also brings up the struggle that our new generation has, because of the upcoming technologies ;As it has affected the way people do not consider grammar rules the way we should. Even the way we consider “texting”, many of us take shortcuts and brush off grammar as though it has no significance. Once people begin to misplace punctuation, putting it in ways that don’t even make proper English, the sentence could be comprehended in a new manner. In other words, a way that the author hadn't envisioned. However, when …show more content…
(page 71.) This quote informs the reader that not all grammar rules are set in stone. Sometimes the rules can be changed with different rules. It's all about sentence structure: the book brings this up multiple times. "And now, let us just count the various important tasks the apostrophe is obliged to execute every day," is an essential part of the book. (This can be located on page 40.) Most of the book unnerves on, about how the apostrophe is applied incorrectly or neglected altogether. This quote opens up the opportunity for the author to educate the reader about the topic. The author was able to include all the ways about how and when to use the correct punctuation. 3. Explain the narration style in terms of point of view and how it helps to develop the
1) The main point of the essay is revealed in paragraph two where it states, “The cause of my anguish is that I am the lone bastion of testosterone in a household that contains two females undergoing estrogen-related Armageddon’s of biblical proportion.” Hughes’ main point is the troubles a man faces in a family with two females. He sets up an illustration comparing his household to a “war zone where every word [he utters] is a potential grenade threatening to blow up in [his] face.” This comparison exaggerates the position the author is in through the metaphor he uses of the war zone to capture his family dynamic. 2) Hughes secondary point in the essay is the “existential question: ‘What the heck went wrong here and what do I do about it?’”
Techniques such as repetition, sentence length, and metaphoric diction are present in the literature, whereas acting and sound are used on the big screen. This narrative, told

In the short fiction story “The Monkey Garden” by Sandra Cisneros, the author uses deep, rich figurative language to effect the exotic setting. “There were sunflowers, big as flowers on Mars and thick cockscombs bleeding the deep red fringe of theater curtain” (Cisneros 1). A simile is used to create a scene of being on another planet, a place where the monkeys once lived. The usage of descriptive words such as, “ bleeding the deep fringe” (1), and “ thick cockscomb” (1), to give the reader a sense of being in a jungle filled with tropical life and pleasure. The author uses words that are exotic in nature to emanate the jungle scenery.
Correct punctuation is the focus of the book Eats, Shoots, Leaves by Lynne Truss, a self-labeled "zero tolerance approach to punctuation" (Truss). Grammarian, Lynne Truss, attempts to interest the everyday reader in punctuation by using comical situations and correcting popular signs and slogans. Her "inner stickler", however, makes the book come across as pretentious and aggravating to the non-sticklers of the world. Truss uses inappropriate examples such as sticklers getting "very worked up after 9/11 not because of Osama bin-Laden but because people on the radio kept saying 'enormity' when they meant 'magnitude'," since sticklers "really hate that" (Truss 5). The breakdown of the most popular forms of punctuation are useful, but made barely readable due to the author's sense of humor and pretentiousness regarding the subject.
The first thing I did when I went to go read this essay was look up in the index what it focused on, when I saw that it was Language and Communication I thought to myself “oh my gosh this is going to be so boring”, but once I read it I actually thought it was extremely comical. When I think about punctuation I immediately freeze, but the way Lewis told his story about how to use punctuation was brilliant. In this essay, Lewis talked about how to use parenthesis, commas, semicolons, colons, exclamation points, quotation marks, and the dash; However, my favorite section was when he was talking about comma usage.

Every story has two things: an event, and a witness. Storytelling is, simply, a witness sharing an event with others who did not see it. The art of storytelling is a creative way to talk about an event with so much detail that the audience of the story comes close to perceiving what the witnesses perceived. A story can be told artistically from two points of view: first person and third person. A first person narrator tells the story of the event from the memory of a witness and third person narrator tells a story from an objective point of view of one who knows more about the characters than the characters themselves.

The way that she capitalized all the letters is something that can engage the reader and the curiosity of knowing what is taking our lives?
Narrative point of view can express a different perspective to the reader by presenting experience, voice, and setting. Perspective is a particular way or attitude of considering events, by whatever character’s point of view the narrator takes. A character’s background and experiences in their life is a key to help the reader relate to the character. Culture may provide more insight about the circumstances, and can change a reader’s perspective, as well as the voice of the narrator - sophisticated or naive.
Everyone makes mistakes in their writing. As time progresses people are getting more lazy when it comes to constructing a piece of writing. Sloppy habits, writing with slang terms, and utilizing tools such as spell-check or grammar-check have contributed to the devolution of the English language. In the essay “I H8 TXT MSGS”, John Humphrys employs the appeals logos, pathos, and ethos, directed toward texters; to address the destruction of the English language by mainstream grammatical errors used in text messaging. Humphrys utilizes logos, persuading with the use of reasoning; through analogies and hard evidence to recognize the loss of English language by text messaging.
All of these factors combine and work well together to form a well-executed argument within Cullington’s essay. Cullington begins her essay by addressing her opposition: “It’s taking over our lives” (pg. 361). She cites studies done that suggest that a decline in the quality of students’ formal writing has occurred since the advent of text messaging, and she also cites teachers who believe that their own students’ works are influenced for the worse by the students’ being accustomed to texting and using textspeak. Cullington then proposes her opposing position that the writing of students is unaffected by their use of texting and text speak. She also cites studies that support her thesis that text messaging and textspeak do not have an effect on

Grammar is a system and structure of language. To me grammar is more than just knowing the rules and standards; it is being able to apply them in writing. Growing up I was taught all of the grammar rules through many grammar worksheets. However, my Pedagogical Grammar class gave me a new outlook on how to teach grammar. I will use strategies learned from my peers, research, experience, and my grammar class to explain how I will teach my students grammar.
