In the years gone by, the Caribbean diet consisted mostly of provisions and other crops, grown locally. Almost every household had a backyard whereby foods were grown. This was possible as wives were housewives and life was not so hectic and household members were doing their own gardening. Today however, due to the economy and the fact that most household members are required to work to sustain life, there are no longer those backyard gardens thereby forcing the diet and lifestyle of the Caribbean people to change drastically. The Caribbean has now adopted the eating habits of the United States and even the diseases that come along with those types of foods. Now in todays’ world where the economy is changing swiftly there is the need for …show more content…
Having to go into the world of work the Caribbean people no longer has the time to grow their own garden. Hence the reason, fast food restaurants from the United States have become fully globalized and this is no different in the Caribbean. Many of the restaurants in the United States have a multitude of franchises in the Caribbean. Yes, diabetes is hereditary but it also stems from lifestyle factors and poor eating habits. Hereditary plays an important role in the development of diabetes but those chances increase when our diets include foods that carry a high content of sugar on a regular basis. The regular consumption of fried foods as is done in the Caribbean region increases our body mass index which in turn causes persons to become obese which then leads to other health complications like diabetes and coronary failure (Datz T, 2014). Before fried foods were consumed on a regular basis persons never suffered from these diseases in such a great extent. The diet and lifestyle before was quite different and even though they ran the chance of developing diabetes due to hereditary reasons they did not due to their smart eating choices. So, the evidence is there to show that the change in lifestyle and food consumption is the main reason behind all the diseases that follow. Trinidad & Tobago currently possesses one of the highest mortality rates for diabetes which stems from the poor eating habits of the citizens (USC News, n.d.). This seems to be something that is a problem to control as everyday there are new fast food restaurants opening and people are consuming these foods on a regular basis without any
I attended the event titled Unnatural Causes Bad Sugar on Thursday, October 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. The event centered on the ways in which many factors influence people’s lives and significantly impact health. The first part of the event centered on watching a short video that focused on the damage to health that Native American tribes faced after they lost their water. There was a large increase in the amount of Native Americans who got diabetes and who were dying. It was thought that biology and genes were one of the main causes behind the increase in diabetes, but in reality there were many other factors. Geographic location, social and economic class status, and income level has an impact on a person’s health.
In the 1800’s an almost pure capitalist country was being controlled, bribed, and powered by Robber Barons which employed most of their population in an unmonitored economy. During the late 19th century these Robber Barons were in control of most citizen’s salary. In order to increase profits many factories paid their workers a decent wage so their employees could afford their products. That was the United States. Again a similar problem is arising.
The Critique Essay of the “Escape from the Western Diet” In his work Escape from the Western Diet Michael Pollan focused on American negative food habits, their place in different spheres of the society and general possible ways to improve the food behavior. “The Western Diet is known for its lack of fresh fruit and vegetables and its strong reliance on fast-food, high sugar beverages, high-fat dairy, refined carbohydrates and red meat” (“Western Diet”). While many experts focus on its content, Pollan suggested to turn the attention to the effect the diet has on social, industrial and medical spheres. The author highlighted they unlikely will completely abandon the Western diet as it promote their development.
In the article, “Escape from The Western Diet,” by Michael Pollan, who has also written many nutritional books, blames our unhealthy eating on the food industry. He argues that we should avoid any processed foods because of what they have become (424). Also, he claims that the American views for preparing a meal has downgraded over the years (425). His solution is to not overeat, but to eat plants instead because they are not as manipulated

I combined how your nutrition is important because it can prevent you from getting sick or becoming overweight and suffering. Lack of nutrition education, marketing persuading consumers to want harmful food, and the healthcare system not being effective all have to deal with why healthy nutrition is not being focused on or accomplished. This topic is important and interesting if you are interested in global healthcare or local healthcare. Each one of the problems can be solved or reduced to focus on the human nutrition or to decrease the rate of deaths due to obesity, heart failures, etc. The research and the 7-step plan, promoting healthier food options, and reduction of pills and helping patients learn about nutrition are all ways to improve the lack of
Imperialists often profess to have an interest in the development of a people or state they intend to conquer. And sometimes there is indeed evidence of ‘development’, but the benefits to the imperialists are always disproportionately greater. The Region has its politico-economic genesis in the bowels of imperialism. The Region, consequently, has progressed or retrogressed within this very context of imperialism. Imperialism has condemned the Caribbean Region to ‘Third World’ status perpetually it seems.

The Caribbean is a place where most of the countries share the history. It is a history that is deeply embedded with loss and struggle. Over the course of history, the Caribbean has been through a lot of stages from slavery, colonialism come right down to independence and post-independence. With slavery, the blacks were introduced, then we have the Europeans and of course the Indians came with the indenture ship program. Since the Caribbean has such a diverse array of cultures and ethnic groups, it is expected that these groups will leave their own impact on the society as a whole.
