In document 3 it says “ The South thus quickly established a rural way of life supported by an agricultural economy based on slave labor.” So if the South lost slavery their economy would fall and the south would be very very poor. So therefore the Southern states left the union because they didn’t want to be poor. In conclusion the Southern states wanted to secede from the union because President Lincoln was elected, Uncle Tom’s Cabin was published, and because slavery was the basis of their community.
Consequently, the North and the South developed different societies and economies. During the 1830s, the abolitionist movement in the North viewed slavery as an immoral act and urged the end of slavery, which took away the liberty of slaves. In response to the abolitionism, many Southerners became more determined to defend slavery. This led to the splitting of free and slaves states. The North would have free states and the South would have slave states.
In conclusion, the primary cause of the civil war was not slavery instead was the issue of states rights. The Northern armies won the Civil War and the the South returned to the Union. “The Civil War started because of differences between free slaves states and the power of the government that said if slavery was correct or incorrect. ”(The Civil War in America Prologue). Slavery was right at that time but now it is wrong.
Determinations and preservation of the slaves across the country struck fear in the eyes of the Confederacy (Carnahan, 2007). Sometimes the government put its citizens in situations that are not always good. Some masters bought slaves not because they were willing but because it was a rule in the plantation sector since some treat them with more dignity than other owners. The Emancipation Proclamation added force to the union as it strengthens it both politically and militarily.
With the rise of white supremacist groups and the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) the persecution of black Americans increased as their freedom was seen as a threat to white Americans. When ex-slaves would try to flee plantations and set up their own farms, they would be lynched or murdered. In 1867, a former slave owner in Tennessee said that they continued to whip, maim and kill black Americans as if slavery still existed. The amendments and acts did not make the perception of black Americans change, by law they were regarded as equal individuals who deserved equal treatment everywhere, but in society they were still regarded as inferior and animalistic, and laws and legislation in southern states were set up to continue that ideology. The ‘Plessy vs. Ferguson’ Supreme Court case approved the ‘separate but equal’ legal segregation.
Preparing for the abolition of the implemented throughout 1862. December 30, 1862, the president signed "Emancipation Proclamation", announced blacks living in the territories in rebellion against the United States, "now and forever" free. The document gave impetus to the adoption of Amendment XIII (1865) to the US Constitution. Proclamation been rightly criticized by radical Republicans, since the emancipation of slaves was carried out where it is not distributed power of the federal government, but it has changed the nature of the Civil War, turning it into a war for the abolition of slavery. In addition, it has forced foreign countries, including the UK, do not support the Confederacy.
While the north was becoming increasingly industrial, with factories and mills popping up all over, the southern states stayed with family farming, and plantations. With the conquest of the north came their ideologies, including factories. Rhett once again realized this when he told Scarlett about the decline of the Old South. Abolishing slavery was not Abraham Lincoln 's main goal of the Civil War, but in a way he did on the down low.
Slaves in the South sided with the British over the issue of independence because the British often promised slaves their freedom in exchange for their support in the Revolution. In essence, the Deep South did not favor independence because Britain endorsed slavery, and the southerners feared that the Patriots would eventually put an end to slavery, thus wreaking havoc on the economic provisions for the wealthy planter class. Overall, Pennsylvania and the Deep South did not want independence for a myriad of reasons. Pennsylvania was disinterested in independence because it did not have powerful allies like other states. The Deep South was also not seeking independence because ultimately, they did not want to lose slavery.
Lincoln’s proclamation was one of strategy as it aimed to abolish slavery as well as recruit those previously enslaved to help the North win the civil war. The freeing of slaves would also result in the weakening of the South’s economy since “The South’s economy was based on slavery.” (Source A). Thus the South’s ability to effectively wage a war against the Union North would have been depleted and the slaves in those areas would be freed from years of slavery, both being a dual victory for Lincoln. “
With no final agreement, the country had no other choice but to go to war with itself. The slow decline of the, once powerful, Southern economy and the major issue of the abolishment of slaves are what led to the cause of the American Civil War. While economics and political structure played an important role in the cause of the Civil War, slavery was the main reason why altercations arose. Many historians and teachers try to hide the fact that slavery was such a huge factor in the cause of the Civil War because they looked at slavery as the “norm”. To them, the differences between the Republicans and Democratic formed great disagreement.
Although The Tallamadge Amendment prohibited slavery, if passed, southern congressman threatened and this could lead to civil war, but the Tallamadge Amendment was never passed. This foreshadowed Missouri to become more of a slave state because southern states pushed for Missouri to become a slave
The Civil War was a battle of great importance to our history of the United States. On April 12th, 1861 this battle broke out between the Union States, North, and the Confederate States, such as the South. The Civil War took place all throughout the United states, and did not come to an end until the Union won the war on May 9, 1856. So, our question of “What caused the Civil War”, comes with three important answers. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were Economic, Social, and Political differences.
1. There are many causes of the most devastating war in American History. We know this war as the Civil War. The first cause of the war was the election of Abraham Lincoln. Although an election of a new president may not seem as such a big deal, it was.
the primary causes of the Civil War were the expansion of slavery and sectionalism. Slavery was the main cause of the Civil war. It brought separation of both the north and the south. There were also issues that could have caused the civil war during the Revolutionary era in 1787. Abraham Lincoln becoming president sparked the war in the early years because he was a Republican president who southerners believed posed a threat to slavery, and by the resulting secession of the South.
