This essay is designed to provide a comprehensive view on the membership of Mauritius being part of the Regional Trade Agreement namely being a member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa . A further critical analysis will then be carried out to examine how Mauritius’s position would be made stronger or made more feeble if COMESA adopt the European Union model even if both are regionally united groups aiming to boost the general development of a geographic area through integration . Part 2-Brief Historical context of Mauritius being part of Regional Trade Agreement and its relationship with COMESA Mauritius is a small island state situated in the Indian Ocean forming part of East Africa continent. This section is to briefly introduce an overview of Mauritius which has developed great trade relations with the African neighbours. On the regional front, Mauritius is a member of several regional integration agreements and has negotiated business operating conditions under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) . The European experience has been important and visible enough to attract, by itself, the attention that made it de facto a model of regional integration for many, and an incentive to attempt to pursue similar paths. This is not to say that the EU has been active in promoting and support regional integration, and to some extent actively contributed to export its model. Part 5- Implication for Mauritius if COMESA adopted the EU Model The last part of the essay will analyze the implications for Mauritius in the event COMESA adopted any or some of the features of the European Model and the impediments which stand in achieving this. The advantages and disadvantages that would results from Mauritius membership of COMESA if it adopts more EU like model in full. A critical assessment of whether such model would be most appropriate and/or achievable for COMESA. The political and social concerns will be highlighted.
