In David S. Landes book, The Wealth and Poverty of Nations, he decides to take a historical approach on the reasons behind why some people remain poor and how others are so rich by trying to comprehend the reasons that lead to advances in economies and modernization in certain regions around the world over the past few decades. In other words by asking how we have come to where we are today in the sense of making, getting and spending. Throughout the book, Landes talks about how we live in a world filled with inequality and diversity therefore leading to classifying those who are poor and unable to afford medical health care living in the North and the wealthy in the South. David S. Landes aim was to basically make people aware of how it is actually geography that is responsible for this division between countries that have caused a lot of hardship for the unprivileged people by making it impossible for them to improve economically as a result of their geographical location on the map.
John Bodley’s article, “Price of Progress”, argues that America and other developed countries worry about economic development less than developing countries. The economies in developed countries believe that every culture should be full of progress. Progress in economies is defined by how high your income is, how high your standard of living is, greater security and how good your health is. The most common used measure of progress is one’s standard of living. The lowest class of people is the tribal people who have different cultures and lifestyles and they find ways to survive on their own.

Isabel Allende’s, My Invented Country: A Nostalgic Journey Through Chile, is her memoir about her native country, yet also sheds light to other important societal roles in Chile. As she passionately writes about her experiences, Allende makes it evidently clear that she loves her homeland, regardless of what troubles the country encounters. Nonetheless, it should be noted that her memoir is solely based upon her memories, and incorporates a sense of fiction to better help tell her story through vivid descriptions of the natural landscape and/or the people she interacted with. Her book was compelling to me as her passion for her country was expressed through her usage of language and descriptive experiences that portrayed her emotions during
The Chad-Cameroon Pipeline project is a $3.7 billion project that consists of 300+ oil wells which are expected to produce one billion barrels of oil over the span of 25 years. This project funded by World Bank was created with the intent to put a 640 mile underground pipeline between Chad through Cameroon and the over to an offshore export loading facility. Because Chad is a land locked, desert country in Northern Africa, it is one of the poorest countries in the world. The revenue coming from the pipeline was an economic solution to help decrease the poverty and poor economic conditions of Chad. Due to civil war in Chad, the project had a negative impact.

There is also another important way to measure growth of an economy and that is called real GDP ( real Gross Domestic Product) . Real GDP is easier to compare than GDP and shows us a growth in prices in a certain year.
