Edgar Allan Poe, a writer, a poet, a critic, he sounds like any other Amarican writer. However, Edgar grew up to be more than an ordinary writer. His truamitizing childhood and hardships in life contributing to so much of his written work. But even his written work, the stories and tales that captivates people even to this day, could never save Poe’s from his hard life within poverty and sickness.
Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 by his mother and father who were, at the time, traveling actors. About five weeks after he was born, he was left with his parental grand-parents (Meltzer17). It was the story that brought Poe to fame and still remains his most reconised piece of work written (Meltzer 108). It is thought that the sickness of his wife, Virginia, and the dead of his mother contributed to the making of the story (Meltzer 108). Realizing how famous his story had become is a matter of weeks, Poe went on tour. He read his story out loud for fans and incressed the fame of the story and his self (Meltzer 108). Poe’s stories “Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” display the dark romantic theme of a man’s soul by the development of the setting, plot, and characterization. As both stories begin, the initial device used to advance the theme is setting, which remains grim and sinister throughout the duration of both stories. Accompanying these physical details is the plot, each of which includes the murder of an innocent man. Most notably, the characterization of each piece’s narrator allows the audience to fully understand their internal struggle and its final resolution. While “Cask of Amontillado” contains an overall intriguing and unexpected plot as well as setting, the narrator’s characterization proves this story to conclude in a less
Poe 's writing career had many ups and downs. However, he did get a job as an editor of a newspaper with a contest he won. Afterwards, he married Virginia Clemm in 1836 (The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore). Strangely, she was his first cousin and he was 27, while she was 13. After this, Poe then began to publish his best writings such as: ¨The Raven¨, ¨The Black Cat¨, and many more.
His teachers in his boarding school in refer to him as "Master Allan" and later in 1818 he moves to different English school. On Febraury, Poe enters the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and finds out that is childhood crush Amanda Royster is engaged to be married. Poe moves from Richmond to Baltimore in 1827 and is later enlisted in the U.S. Army as Edger A. Perry. Edgar's first book Tamerlane and Other Poems are published in Baltimore. Frances Allan dies on February 29 , but Edgar is not at her burial.
Poe’s adolescent life could not get any better. He had a father who paid for his tuition at school and grew attached to him ever since he met Poe. during the next three years he studied under private tutors, at the residence of the Allen’s in Richmond. In 1826(age 17) he entered the University of Virginia, where he remained less than a year. Even though John Allen had plenty of money he gave Edgar only a third of what he needed to pay the college.
The job was in Richmond, so the three family members packed up and moved there. After moving, Edgar became infatuated with his 14 year old cousin and decided to marry her. Over the next ten years, he created himself as an editor, short story writer, and poet. During this time, Poe wrote “The Raven”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”. Edgar had been dealing with depression and alcoholism almost his entire life.
Poe had very little money and began to gamble, he quickly was overrun with debt. Allan then withdrew him from college and left him to figure the debt out on his own. Poe attempted to publish a book of poems in 1827 called “Tamerlane”, no one found any interest in the book. Poe had no job and no income so he resorted to joining the army, he was ranked as “Sergeant Major”. After earning this rank he soon deserted the army.
After a duration of a year or so Poe left the university with the small funds he had stored and ventured unto another parallel lifestyle. Poe joined the US army, in the year of 1827. In order to enrol Poe forged his age, so as to appear older and had his name slightly altered to suit the situation. During this time he published many of his poems such as ‘Tamerlane’. Shortly after Poe decided to quit the army, he contacts his foster- father and begs for forgiveness and assistance (consent) in withdrawing from enlistment, he also sends his love to his mum and wishes them well.

Poe went to the charitable Richmond, Virginia, home of John and Frances Allan, whose name Poe took later as his middle name.” Now living under the Allans, in 1815 they decided to move to London, England where they enrolled Poe in private schooling for their five-year stay, (“Edgar Allan Poe,” 1998). Although John and Frances Allan cared for Edgar as if he were their own son, tensions grew between Edgar and Mr. Allan as Poe grew older, (1998). John Allan did not support Poe’s interest in writing. The refusal of John to give Poe a hand at any cost finally pushed Edgar to the point of leaving the Allan household and beginning a life on his own, (1998).
Before leaving for the University of Virginia he was furtively connected with to a young woman named Elmira. When her family learned of the engagement she was sent away and taken from him. A long time later, devastated and scarcely making due after a disasterous endeavor to carry on with a military life he wound up living with a close relative, Mrs. Clemm. When he was 26 and she was 13 Poe covertly hitched his first cousin Virginia. He was given to her until her demise from tuberculosis.

Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
