Critical theory is a philosophy that involves being critical of the prevailing view of society. In other words, paying attention at beliefs that might cater only for privileged people and changing that totally. Critical theory in education questions how our education system can better improve our education irrespective of socio economic back ground or other barriers. It offers and understanding and opportunities of the different critical perspectives of disadvantaged members of the society. Therefore it promotes an idea that education is the key tool to social transformation.‘ A theory is critical to the extent that it seeks human “emancipation from slavery”, acts as a “liberating … influence” and works “to create a world which satisfies the needs and
Quality Control: This is one of the techniques often used in establishing quality assurance in the educational system at all levels. Ojedele (2007) stated that quality control should be the concern of a country in its drive towards technological and scientifically development. vi. Access and Equity: The issue of access or the trend of students transiting from the junior secondary school to other levels of education has not been encouraging as it has been falling short of the expectation Ojedele, (2007). The issue at the tertiary level presents a more serious concern in terms of variation in access at the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and in terms of gender disparity.
The use of instructional materials to provide learning activities for practice and drill needs realistic guidelines for their application for classroom setting. Students will learn more easily and remember longer if they practice individually what they understand or have learned through prior classroom experiences. It is important for the teacher to provide a variety of interesting drill items and situations in which students can use the skill or knowledge in other phases of learning (Oredina, 2011). Since textbooks and other instructional materials have a direct impact on what is taught in schools and how it is taught, curriculum development and curriculum materials are sensitive matters which are of great political importance. An Invitation to Life: The Art of Teaching Introduction Teaching is defined as the process of education which is guided by personal values, educational needs, and a range of beliefs that a teacher holds to be true (Eisner, 1994). In order to teach effectively, one has to rely on educational theories which inform them about how children learn best. Moreover, the beliefs of an educator impacts classroom decision making, ultimately influencing children’s’ chances and opportunities to learn (Levin, He, & Allen, 2014). However, there is a gap between theoretical and practical knowledge of an emerging educator due to many reasons (Hascher, Cocard, & Moser, 2004). In this paper, we would be looking at the various issues regarding the art of teaching, namely, the importance of theory together with an educator’s teaching philosophy and beliefs, the increasing gap between theories and real-life experiences and practices, why it is a challenge to put theory and learning into practice and lastly, on how we as educators, can bridge that gap in order for us to embrace a mind-set of continual change as teaching is ultimately a life-long journey.
These show that there is no equal opportunity for admission into schools as priority to entry to a school is dependent on the social class of the child’s parents. I feel that by using social class of parents as a way to determine which child could be selected to study in prestigious schools, it worsens the situation of social immobility because it would mean that children who comes from low-income family could only study in neighbourhood schools and they might not receive an education that is as good as in prestigious schools. As a result, it might affect their capabilities and their income for their work in the future which have an impact on their social class in the future as
We must incorporate what is best for the students by helping further develop their education and not what will get us the most funding possible. The American education system is faltering and has strayed from its center purpose, which is to do what is best for the students and not what gets the schools more money. If I had the opportunity to change the American educational system the key issues I would address are the distribution of funding, the standardization of curriculum, and corporate influence because of the effects it has on the students learning and growth as a person.
