The role of education in facilitating social and economic progress is well accepted today. The ability of a nation’s population to learn and perform in an environment where scientific and technological knowledge is changing rapidly is critical for its growth. While the importance of human capital and its augmentation for a nation’s development cannot be over-emphasized, its micro-economic consequences also need to be acknowledged. Improvements in the functional and analytical ability of children and youth through education open up opportunities leading to both individual and group entitlements. The word which derives its origin from al dars (‘darasa’) i.e. to teach or to learn is synonymous with the traditional seats of Islamic learning today. Presently, there are four types of Islamic educational institutions prevailing all over India; Maktab, Madrasa, Jamia and Darul Qur’an which are institutions corresponding to schools, high schools, colleges and universities. Common people call all these four types of Islamic educational institutions as Madrasa. Therefore, our subject of discussion here is the second type of ‘Madrasa’ which are funded and run by Muslims. Madrasas in India are mainly of three kinds: some Madrasas are recognized by state government like in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Jharkhand. Though small, these Madrasas draw salaries and collect grant from their respective governments. Thus, the curricula of these Madrasas are by and large similar to those of state sponsored schools or colleges in addition to Islamic subjects. Their degrees are recognized by the state so that students having degrees from such Madrasas can enter the ‘mainstream’ education. Then there are the affiliated (un-aided) Madrasas, which do not receive financial support from the state but are ‘recognised by the Bihar Madrasa Board which allows their students to appear in exams conducted by the Board.
