Critical Review 1. Teaching with Technology Simon Hooper and Lloyd P. Rieber We all know that technology refers to advancements in the methods and tools we use to learn. In the classroom, technology can encompass all kinds of tools from low-tech pencil, paper, and chalkboard, to the use of presentation software, or high-tech tablets, online collaboration and conferencing tools, and more. The newest technologies allow us to try things in physical and virtual classrooms that were not possible before. Today, I cannot imagine how difficult it is to teach without technology and how hard it is to learn without it.
As I said there are a lot of benefits to having and using technology in a classroom. Technology in the classroom enables the use of more interactive educational tools, which allows for a dynamic learning experience that directly benefits students. And there are ways to incorporate technology in the classroom. Centered primarily on collaboration and sharing, Web 2.0 computer applications encourage student self-expression, interaction with peers, and opportunity for authentic learning experiences (see). Through the implementation and integration of Web 2.0 computer technologies in the classroom setting, students are now able to have new authentic and meaningful learning experiences.
Cooperative learning, discussions, student inquires, and projects are used to meet the needs of auditory, visual, kinesthetic learners. (Kellough & Kellough, 2008, pg 12) The middle school models includes enrichment courses that are available to students. These allow students to have different learning experiences. These are useful for students to try different courses and help find out where their interests lie. Finally, the middle school model also focuses on physical education classes.
Nowadays, technology is heavily used for educational purposes. Integrating technology in education can be extremely beneficial. It can be a useful method for the students and their teachers, which improves both their skills. In addition, being active on the Internet when learning can make students and teachers’ academic journey easier. There is a lot of evidence that proves how useful technology is for both students and their instructors.
Based on Millar, the main ideas of science education are to ensure the students to gain an understanding of scientific knowledge as it is appropriate to their needs, interests and capacities and also to develop knowledge about science by understanding the methods and skills. In order to achieve this aim, the practical work that was conducted in school must emphasize the theory that has been taught through practical activities. Moreover, the needs of practical work in curriculum will be connected to the main purpose of practical work which is to possess student’s scientific knowledge to be best seen, judged and enables communication rather than enquiry. This is because practical work involves action and reflection where most of the practical tasks requires students to develop their thinking skills and science process skills (Millar, 2004). As we see the pattern of student’s interest in school, they prefer to be more active in class and able to centralized their ideas and opinion.
It could very well lead to innovations and furthermore advancements in the classroom technology. Today technology is thriving and the reasons it continues to thrive is not because of people with no to little education. It is because of the ones that grow with technology. These are the ones that obtain the proper education. This education will build upon what is already set today to bring advancements in the
As we can notice traditional classroom cannot longer satisfy the needs of education in the 21st- century. So we have to make radical changes in order to create the classroom that will motivate students to learn. Teachers today teach using different pedagogical approaches and various instructional methods. According to fact that our educational system is changed with the help of technology the 21st -century classroom should be a productive environment where students can develop the skills they will need in workplace. The modern 21st-century classrooms should encourage students to develop their high order thinking skills.
Rules are significant because they help install academic integrity and scholarly values into students. Time spent establishing and reviewing policies for the classroom is not instruction time wasted, being that without the policies implemented the instruction will likely have little value because the students are not being managed properly to instill proper learning. When developing rules, I feel as if it is necessary to include student input. While I think this is only beneficial to an extent and to have the teacher as the executive decision maker, I think it is vital to my classroom management plan. For students to be able to collaborate in the rulemaking process shows that their voices are not only heard but valued in your classroom, which provides them with an enriching environment.
When used appropriately, different technologies can help expand access to education, strengthen the relevance of education to the increasingly digital workplace, and raise educational quality by helping make teaching and learning in an active process connected to real life.
