Educational Transformation: The Answer for Educational Reform
Educational Transformation: The Answer for Educational Reform. Education is not about turning people into robots zombies—seating students in straight rows—telling them what to think, instead of teaching them how to think. Williams, R. (2016), “Education is about producing people that will think creatively, innovatively, critically and independently with the ability to connect” Williams [video file]. Bell, D. (2016) conducted a study explaining that education needs to be transformed to provide opportunities for students with different talents such as, creativity, innovation, and agricultural skills, for economic benefits and a sustainable future. For years schools have been making

The investigation brought awareness to four areas of conflicts under the education reform (i) political dimension (ii) the church vs. the state issue (iii) cultural differences and (iv) scarce resources Eyken, Goulden, & Crossley, (1992). The findings of the investigation concluded that the education reform lacks success for improvement in students’ performance. Belize was not the only country to implement education reform with the intention of improving its education system; however, Taiwan Ministry of Education also borrowed policies and strategies from another country without considering their local context. Taiwan`s major conflict that arise during the process of the education reform is the complicated curriculum and the out of control teacher education. , 2010 p.2) the highlight from the debate is that teacher education program and school districts are to be held accountable for graduates, teacher education must go under a radical change to meet the changing needs of students, policy reform is not working it confuses each other in the education system, teacher education needs to shape the way the recruit and select teachers, only teachers with a social justice ideology should teach, Screen how teachers are selected to teach, the teacher education needs to be honest in examining and understanding their strengths, weaknesses, constraint and potential in for them to move forward (Hill et al. , 2010 p.3). As a result, the debate findings recommends “that programs adds some qualitative data to the selection process and engaged in aggressive community recruiting to ensure more diverse teaching force.” (Hill et al. , 2010 p.10). Another finding is to make induction programs a school-wide effort and cater a mere strategic matching process for mentors and new teachers.” (Hill et al. , 2010 p.10). On the other hand (Valli & Rennert, 2002 p.7) conducted a discussion search titled “New standards and assessments? Curriculum transformation in teacher education.” The article does not support the above information. Teachers focus on teaching more
This statistic shows the lack of diversity in the educational work force. Robert Jensen, a professor at the University of Texas and the author of the 1998 White Privilege Shapes the U.S., points out a simple observation; that even white professors who lack the preparation and knowledge that is required in order to successfully teach, can have their disqualifications easily overlooked based not only on their race, but also on their social class, and often times their
The current form of teacher accountability, is well known, but has little support. The system we have adapted to, judges our teachers and views them as simple minded. Tucker points out in the report, Fixing Our National Accountability Problems, that having standardized tests judging our teachers is not giving students a better education. Nocera uses Tucker’s quote: “There is no
“The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change.” - Carl Rogers. The current education system has only met simple requirements of the state and does not fully seek to bring out the potential in each and every student. It may find the simple flaws of the young scholars and fix those flaws to some degree, but time can also heal a once broken wing of a fallen hatchling. Simply because this hatchling has wings, it does not mean it has taught itself the ability to fly.
Instead a program should be created to help students change their ways and their knowledge to it’s full
The underrepresentation of African American teachers in U.S. schools is a longstanding issue that has significant implications for student outcomes. This dissertation will explore the historical context of African American education and teachers, highlight the persistent disparities in education outcomes between African American students and their peers, and examine the impact of the underrepresentation of African American teachers on student outcomes. Despite decades of progress toward greater diversity in the teaching profession, African American teachers remain vastly underrepresented in comparison to their white counterparts. This thematic concern is of particular importance because research has shown that students of color, particularly African American students, benefit academically and socially from having teachers who share
Low pay and high stress are the predominate factors that are forcing black and Latino teachers to leave the profession at higher rates than their white peers and deterring others from entering the profession however the symptoms contribute to the overall dilemma we find ourselves
According to Voight’s, Hanson’s, O’Malley’s, and Adekanye’s study, many black children reported of having less favorable relationship between their white instructors compared to white students, while black and hispanic instructors tend to have a steady report of positive relationship and attitude with their students from all races (Voight, Hanson, O’Malley, Adekanye, 2015). Moreover, in a sample from the Texas school districts, districts with more Hispanic and Black teachers have better success in their students’ academic performance for all races, compared to districts that have a larger number of white instructors (Voight, Hanson, O’Malley, Adekanye, 2015). This goes back to the discrepancies in a student-teacher relationship when both parties do not share the same understanding of each other’s background and cultures. The rift in the relationship is mended when a mutual understanding manifests between the two. Hispanic and Black instructors already have a similar background with the current students, which makes their attitude towards these groups more sympathetics and understanding compared to a white teacher who may had the mainstream
en Z1791763 EPFE 321 Mid-term Over the years there have been many different views on the direction that education and schooling will take in the role of the United States society taken by influential people. Some of these people included the Puritans of the Plymouth Colony, who believed that children needed to work to prevent them from being influenced by the devil. Thomas Jefferson who believed that everyone needs to be educated for the betterment of society and that people should earn their respect and merits and that it shouldn’t be just given out for nothing. Horace Mann started to try and standardize schooling so that if children moved they would still be learning nearly the same curriculum that they had left, he also tried to further
Beyond this many teachers gave poorer evaluations of students due to their race or ethnicity (Egalite et al.). By having more racially diverse teachers we can help students achieve and pursue success. Integrating this diversity is also important for white students because it allows the students to understand and value equal and fair opportunities for themselves and their peers. These pieces of evidence support that students' test scores are positively skewed when a teacher shares the same race and culture with the student. While test scores are important they are not
courses in college that have opened up my mind to the issue. The more information I learn about this issue, the more surprised I am that our society still exhibits bias, because as much as the United States preaches about equality, it appears as if society has segregation in minor ways. Although the debate between whether there are biased questions on the SATs or not seems to favor that there aren’t by popular opinions, there is still biased behavior occurring in school systems that prevent certain groups of students from getting the proper resources needed. Because I would like to work in an low-income area, which most likely would contain minorities, as a teacher I would make the effort to help those students get the sufficient help needed. This motivates me to become a part of the education field, because caring teachers are much needed in area like this.
Schools have been a part of the history of the United Sates since the 1600’s in the colonies. Throughout our history they have taken on many different forms and have gone through many different changes. One of the very first forms they took was called the Common School Movement. The movement was founded by Horace Mann, Mann had many beliefs for the school. One of his major beliefs were to teach basic knowledge to children so that people could function in a democracy.
Academic Summary of “Acting on Beliefs in Teacher Education for Cultural Diversity” By Gay (2010) The article “Acting on Beliefs in Teacher Education for Cultural Diversity” by Gay (2010), who is a Professor at University of Washington in Faculty of Education, focuses on educating teachers for cultural diversity in classroom environments, which is frequently discussed but not a well-developed topic. According to Gay (2010), the society we live in has a huge impact on our lives, although we try to ignore or minimize its effect on educational area. There is a huge Eurocentric emphasis in the educational setting that affect students from culturally, ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds, and because of this she thinks that some major changes
Students shouldn’t be ostracized because of their unique capacities for learning. Standardization limits the creativity that students can expose to make the world a better place. According to the speaker, “we have to go in the exact opposite direction” of standardization. The current model of education has to do away with manufacturing students that benefit the economy and look to teaching in a way that will create a more innovative human race. This is what I believe Ken Robinson has been trying to get across for several years and finally expressed
Introduction of these educational changes like school reform, teaching and teacher professionalism is possible through new curricula. In order to design , develop and disseminate this new curriculum we need a specialized development team but we must be aware that during the era of education reform, effective utilization of this new curriculum lies in the hands of regular teachers. By the actions that the educational system take, when it introduces this new curriculum, it can cause serious resistance to the changes. Resistance to educational change can be defined as students ' and teachers ' affective, cognitive and behavioral specific responses or acts of opposing or struggling with modifications because there is a vested interest in maintaining the status quo(Bemmels and Reshef, 1991; Van den Heuvel, 2009). Teachers resist change when it is introduced to them poorly, when it affects how they do their work, and when they don 't see the need for the changes.
Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists.
