Many species of mammals reside in Alaska. One is of the bear species, the black bear. Black bears have a medium to heavy frame with large ears and powerful limbs. The black bear has a coat that can differentiate from brown, cinnamon, blond, grey-blue, and of course, black. They can adapt to their environment easily but are normally found in forested areas. It has a diet that consists of fruits, buds, berries, nut, insects, and food lest by humans. They are incredible climbers that can use their claws to extract food from the trees. Black bears can weigh from one hundred twenty to six hundred sixty pounds and get to be as tall
Did you know the Musk Deer have fangs? Well they do and I will talk about that more later. I will write about the Musk Deer. I will talk about all of the weird and normal things about the Musk Deer. I will write about the appearance of the Musk Deer, the diet and habitat of the Musk Deer, and interesting facts about the Musk Deer.
Also known as the polar rabbit, the arctic hare is a species of hare which has adapted to survive in polar and mountainous habitats. These hares have thick fur and usually burrow into the ground or under snow to keep warm and sleep. Arctic hares have shorter ears than rabbits, and they thrive in extreme cold. Arctic hares can run up to 60 kilometres per hour. This species of hare is prey to many predators, including ermine, hawks, wolves, falcons, humans, and mostly, the Arctic fox. Arctic hares are about 43-70 centimetres long, not including tail length. They typically have a body mass of about 6-12 pounds, though some large hares can weigh up to 15 pounds. Arctic hares eat woody plants, lichens, mosses, berries, leaves, and various other
It has a round head with almond-shaped eyes. Its triangular ears stand erect and are definitely furry. Some of them have what we call "winter nose", which makes their noses pink on winter.
Many people know what wolves are and often assume they are fierce, carnivorous, beasts. Yes, they are carnivorous, but generally speaking, they are not savage beasts that kill everything in sight. They kill what they need for food to survive and often times are under fed, attacking when they feel threatened or their family is in danger. What most people do not know is that not all wolves are the same, and some are very unique and different from the rest. One of these unique species is found in British Columbia 's Great Bear Rainforest. This rainforest is a quiet, peaceful place, and is virtually one of the last places on earth untouched by humans. This rainforest is home to some very unique creatures, including the "Sea Wolf", more commonly
One of the main reasons polar bears are going extinct is because they aren’t getting the right amount of food they need to survive. Seals, the main food source for the polar bears, are animals that depend largely on the algae that grows on the ice of the Arctic. With the ice content slowly depleting, there isn’t enough seals to sustain the polar bear population. One of the
Earth’s climate has been changing over the last few decades, with the global temperatures rising at a high rate (Corell, 2006). Some of these climate changes are due to natural causes, although the strength at which temperatures are rising indicates human influences, such as increased carbon dioxide emission, as well as other greenhouse gases. Climate change particularly affects the Arctic region, where warmer temperatures are causing decrease in sea ice extent and thickness, permafrost thawing, coastal erosion, changes in ice sheets and shelves, and consequently, changes in the distribution and reproduction rates of Arctic species (Corell, 2006).
There are 3 types of polar bears: ones with thick coats, ones with thin coats and ones with medium coats. It is fall, soon to be winter. The temperatures are dropping rapidly and the bears must be kept warm, or they will freeze to death. Many of the bears have had 2 cubs each but due to the extreme temperatures, many mothers only have one cub left.
In addition, a bear happens to be a hibernating animal. Nevertheless, they only hibernate in the winter. Also, they happen to be endangered in certain countries, despite they are put in captivity and killed and they can be hunted by numerous people. Also bears are mammals since they give birth to live animals. Plus there exist to be various types of bears such as black bears, grizzly, panda, polar, and sun bear. Also a bear lives in caves, and trees.
The origin and evolution of the domestic dog is a rather ambiguous one that is highly debated amongst evolutionary anthropologists. Many question the extent to which domestication has influenced the evolution of the domestic dog due to the ever growing information palaeontologists are discovering. My intent is to examine the theories proposed by palaeontologists and evolutionary anthropologists to see to what extent domestication has influenced the evolution of dogs, taking into account our current technologies and data.
The sea otter is a marine mammal that lives in the northern and eastern coasts of the North Pacific Ocean. They are the heaviest members of the weasel family but are some of the smallest marine mammals. The sea otter has no blubber and the main way to keep warm is its thick coat of fur which is not like most other marine mammals. Did you know the sea otter has 150,000 strands of hair per square centimetre, because of this the Sea otters have the thickest fur of any mammal. In the Maritime Fur Trade, which would eventually kill approximately one million sea otters, began in the 18th century when hunters and traders began to arrive from all over the world for otter pelts, which were one of the world 's most valuable types of fur. The
The evolution of man has always been a controversial topic. However, no matter what your beliefs are the fact is that man evolved from primates. There is very credible fossil evidence to back this up. Fossils allow us to dig deeper into our past and give us an understanding of what life was like for our ancestors. Particularly, I believe that fossils of our ancestors show that we had to develop bipedalism because of natural selection and environmental factors.
This particular bear is a subspecies of the black bear. It has dark nose pads, white or creamy fur, brown eyes, and nearly white claws. This kind of bear is quite rare and maybe about 100 exist near British Columbia. It’s scientific name is the Ursus americanus kermodeii. The few white bears that live outside of British Columbia is only about one in a million.
The grizzly bears adapt to their environment by hunting down their own food. They hunt down carcasses of caribou, moose calves, walruses, ground squirrels, and salmon as well
At Stuyvesant High School, upperclassmen were able to choose an “elective” for Physical Education (never call it Gym!), and the elective I chose second term junior year was a class called Polar Bear. Polar Bear was infamous among Stuy students, because the objective of the class was to emulate a polar bear: running around outside, rain or shine, at all temperatures, from January to June. I thought the class would be sort of fun, the romantic idea of running that permeated the forefront of my mind. Maybe I wasn’t in my right mind.
