Effective classroom management and a clear plan for discipline are essential for positive, productive classroom environments. I believe that classroom management should center on proactive guidelines and procedures that establish clear expectations, foster engagement, and prevent misbehavior and confusion before they arise. Effective classroom managers establish clear guidelines (a.k.a. rules) and procedures on the very first day of class. On the first day of each class, I will explain and discuss classroom guidelines and procedures, and I will firmly engrain these expectations in the daily classroom life over the next few weeks. My classroom will be a safe, positive, welcoming, and comfortable environment for my students. Effective classroom management shifts the focus in the room from controlling students and correcting misbehavior to learning and time on-task. I will organize my classroom in a way that promotes productivity and efficiency. My goal as a classroom manager is to maximize classroom time for student learning by illeminatring time wasted in confusion or disruption. My preferred method for implementing penalties is a ticket that I can quietly give to the misbehaving student. The ticket will be a simple piece of paper that references the rule that the student broke. There will be a place on the ticket for the student and teacher’s signatures, and a note at the bottom of the ticket that asks the student to bring the ticket to me after class so that I can sign it. Requiring the student to bring the ticket to me after class for my signature will give me a chance to privately address the situation and talk with the student. Once we have both signed the ticket, I will file the ticket so that I have documentation should I ever need it. If behavior issues escalate after a ticket has been administered, I will first resort to creating a behavior contract with the student and then to contacting the student’s parents.
