What is the most effective parenting style? Parents have many different ways of raising their child. Some may agree or disagree on how one may parent their child. Some even argue that there is no right or wrong way to parent a child. There are multiple parenting styles such as the assertive style, the aggressive style, and the permissive style. It’s necessary to educate parents about best parenting practices as well as to inform them on how the law defines child abuse. Children need discipline and punishment in order to learn from their mistakes in which they have made, but too much punishment could lead to child abuse and inadequate parenting styles. Permissive parenting is when a parent is so lenient and has absolute no rules for their children. Being a permissive parent includes a lot of nurturing and even some bribery. Diana Baumrind is a developmental psychologist who describes being permissive as having low expectations of maturity and also they do not follow up with discipline. In “What Is Permissive Parenting?”, Baumrind states “permissive parents are more responsive than they are demanding. They are nontraditional and lenient, do not require mature behavior, allow considerable self-regulation, and avoid confrontation." Permissive parents are more like friends and they just want to make their child to be happy. On the other hand, the aggressive parenting style is the complete opposite. Parents who use the aggressive style are so strict and have high expectations, but they are lacking the nurture factor of being a parent. When a child makes a mistake they are usually punished harshly and also they receive negative feedback. Baumrind,the psychologist who described permissive parenting styles, states “these parents are obedience and status-oriented, and expect their orders to be obeyed.” Baumrind describes aggressive parents as controlling and they rarely give positive reinforcement.
