My Topic: Using English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) Enhances EFL Learners to Improve Their English Communication Skills
Background/Literature review
In this decade, English language has definitely become more dominant around the world. Also, English is an important tool of communication and association between the people with different cultures. Actually, English is commonly used for communicating with others especially whoever comes from the developed countries have the important role in educational and political, economic such as The United States and United Kingdom. Therefore, non-native speakers who can communicate by using English will get more opportunities to work and study in those countries. According to Dearden (2014), “there is a fast-moving worldwide shift from English being taught as a foreign language (EFL) to English being the medium of instruction (EMI) in many fields” (p. 2). It shown that using EMI helps the learners to develop the communication skills more than using their mother tongue in non-native speakers. For the non-native speakers, it is hard to have a good chance for developing these skills because they have their own language and they use them in their real life: they learn English as a foreigner language only in the

There are a rising number of students living in the United States that are classified as English Language Learners or ELLs. These students are not only learning grade-level content but also learning how to communicate in English. The majority (77.2 percent) come from Spanish speaking countries in Latin America. Latino ELL students are typically enrolled in schools that do not have experience serving this special population.
Stereotypes of English Learners A numerous population in public schools in America are English Language Learners, and the number of these students is increasing rapidly. In the article ELL Face Unique Challenges, states that “ Over the past 15 years, the number of ELL students has nearly doubled—to about 5 million. By 2015, ELL enrollment in U.S. schools will reach 10 million and, by 2025, nearly one out of every four public school students will be an English Language Learner.”
In an effort to teach literacy in my content area, I have promoted students interaction and discourse as learning strategies. I have experienced that learning is more effective for ELLs when they are given the opportunity to practice their academic language in the classroom. My goals as an instructor, has been to become a facilitator in the learning process and to implement teaching approaches that promote success in all content areas. I have concluded that students should learn the language, not about the
Speaking English becomes one of substantial ability for people nowadays that can be one of causes I have studied in Canada. People are exposed many field where they should use English language when people are surfing internet, reading original major program books even meeting foreign people in work places. These reasons are that why I have learned English since elemental school student in Korea; nevertheless, my English ability was struggled. Since, they taught to focus on only English grammar not practical speaking. Consequently, I decided to come to Canada.
English is really a language of communication and it is ideal for
The United States is a place of freedom. We are a mixing pot that unifies as one. Many religions, cultures, and languages make their home in the Unites States. Many foreigners see the U.S. as an opportunity to seek better lives and education, but when it comes to foreigners and native-born non-English speakers that do not yet know English, it becomes a little more difficult to go about an average day let alone make a better future. Children in school often become English Language Learners, or ELL, to assimilate to the American standards.
Educators of ELs must go beyond the surface level of culture and dive into the assumptions of culture to provide English language acquisition instruction and content area instruction that the student can connect to for
Regarding that EAL students may have deficient level of English skills than the native English speakers, they may have a range of problems with English in every class including limited vocabularies and reading a context (Iwai, 2008). Also, in my placement schools, I observed many EAL students gather around each other for most of lessons and recess times, and use their first language although they are
The Aural-Oral Approach in English Language Teaching In English language teaching there are several approaches that can be applied in a classroom. Each one has purpose and gives concern to certain skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) development. One of these approaches is Aural-Oral Approach. The Aural-Oral Approach is based on developing two language skills: listening and after that speaking which is the earlier stage of learning a language (Geri, 1990).
Whether it’s children raising their educational opportunities, adults seeking employment, or just someone who hopes to travel to an English-speaking country, there is great importance in the English language. Despite my general passion for teaching, I want to teach ESL because it makes a difference. Learning another language isn’t just like learning a new subject. Learning new languages changes lives by opening roads to countries, cultures, people, and opportunities. I’ve participated in assistant teaching in a college level ESL course as a senior in university in a position as an English Speaking instructor.
I will give my own perspective on the use of authentic language, use of games and expressing thoughts and ideas in EFL classrooms. Additionally, I will offer evidence to support my position from literature. My choice of principles is showed in appendix 1. I believe that understanding these principles would allow me to support my learners effectively in their attempts to speak English. Moreover, searching about my chosen principles will help me implement some of them effectively in my teaching to receive great
There are 1.4 million students in the state of California classified as an English Language learner. For the past ten years these students have been denied their rights to a quality education and the services they need to advance and become fluent in English (Blume, 2017). Legal mandates in education are necessary to protect the rights of diverse learners to ensure that students are receiving appropriate instruction that will prepare them to be College and Career Ready. For students who are learning English as a second language, State and Federal requirements are designed to protect the civil rights of these students. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that students cannot legally be denied an education based “on the ground of race, color,
“You can’t see other people’s point of view when you have only one language,” declared psycholinguist, Frank Smith. Just as it is mentioned in this quote, foreign language is important; therefore, people should learn a foreign language at an early age. When learning a foreign language at an early age, it helps people to concentrate and increase comprehension skills. Also, at a young age, the mind is fresh, so the person can take in more information and can easily master a foreign language. In addition, most secondary schools, universities, and jobs require a foreign language to be known.
