During the 1750-1860 India had the most resources and was the richest country in the world. It looked like they could have been the most powerful country in the world, but only one other country took advantage of the fact that they were weak in the military. Have you ever wondered what would have happened if the British still had control of India? The effect that British colonialism had on India was that most of the people there were forced to work for the British. They were not able to handle their own government which caused them to revolt against their own people and the British people took away all of their riches. They were also forced to stay away from the temples and their foods. British Colonialism affected India in there economics, …show more content…
One big thing that was changed was that most of the jobs people had, such as making clothes had been given to machines. This had a really grave impact because not many people were in the high class and those jobs were the reasons they had food and shelter to help their family survive. The people who lost their jobs to a machine were most likely to move to farming, which was all day long. If you did not work even one day you would have been punished and not able to eat food that day. After 2 months of the British rule the Britain government forced a lot of people to switch to their style of clothes. This was a very big part because to the Indian people it was very insulting to switch over, and the people who did not listen to this were sent to jail or were made slaves. When this was happening there were lots of fights between the Indian people about which clothes to wear, and this was the result the British people were looking for. One really big part of the economy was that the people who were the owners of a company or even a shareholder were forced to sell they’re business’s to the British for a very cheap price. This was a very smart move by Britain because then these people were forced to sign with the Bank of England and had to take a loan to survive. Colonialism affected India in the economic stand point by taking away companies, their jobs, and their …show more content…
Even though they were under British control they still were praying to their gods and going to temples. On certain religious days the Indian people have to go to a river because of the religious purposes. The queen decided to not allow them to go to the river which caused a huge revolt were many British and Indian people were killed. Another huge part to the culture was that they were forced to move away to their foods. The Indian population food habits were lentils and vegetables. This was a very smart move by the British people where they made Indians eat non-vegetarian food. This was very insulting to the Indian people because they worship cows and that was one of the foods that they were forced to eat. One part to their culture which was also part of their economy was their clothes. Clothes were a big part of the Indian society because it was like paying respect to their gods by dressing appropriately. British said forget your gods and convert to Christianity or face the consequences. Spreading Christianity was about 30 percent of the reason they came to India in the first place. Colonialism affected India in the culture standpoint because they lost their gods, clothes, and foods.
One of the not so big changes that came to India at that time was the art. Once most of the Indian population started to lose their job they decided to switch over to the arts and that’s how they were making money. After a while the British
The British improved and modernized India which formed their efficiency that they have today. They established railroads and bridges so people can travel thru their country easier. The British also ingrained a fair trading system between India and British. Some may claim that it was not fair because the Indian textiles were getting sold less and less. From 1790 and so on the sales of Indian textiles progressively declined (Doc. 6).
India was most impacted by British imperialism because the poverty
The British East India Company's lack of respect for the people of India, be it religious, economic, or administrative,
They made many changes within the country; Dadabhai Naoroji praises them about in his speech to the London audience in document 18.3. He refers to how the British abolished the religious practice of Sati(when a widow burns herself at her husband's funeral), educated both male and female, gave freedom of rights, and the security of life and prosperity to the people of India. When looking from a British point of view these seem like modern improvements but, actually these were the norms and culture of India. Which Britain had no right to impair. I oppose the harmful, unequal practices, although I believe that India was developed enough to abolish the practices themselve.
One of the ways was the creation of the Proclamation of 1763 by George III. This gave mostly all of land control to Britain. They had the say so of which non- Indians could make that land their residency, who can make money on that land, and etc. British control was like a correctional officer telling the inmates when they can shower, eat, and have yard time.
This was harmful to the people of India because many of the British taxes made for them was only so Britain could become more rich. The imperialists from far away never cared about the well-beings’ of the
(SS) Britain would take buy merchandise from India at lower prices, then force India to pay for all of it back at higher prices. (PS) A lot of the citizens of India would rebel against the British because they were getting out of control and using the citizens of India as slaves. (SS) Historians pointed out that “India was turned into a British colony.” (Titan Team) (PS) Britain, after one hundred years, finally had control over all of India along with all of its trade. (SS) Britain, after seizing India, created the British East India Company which was now India’s trading system with other countries.
Chase Wessinger Dr. Morris History 111 18 September 2016 There have been many historical impacts in the British North American colonies. Between the time frame of 1607 and 1775 I believe the biggest changes were ethnic diversity and population growth amongst the colonies. Through the time span of 1700 to 1775 the colonies’ population grew by ten times. It escalated from 250,000 to 2,500,000.
Imperialism In the 19th and 20th centuries, various powerful nations sent colonizers to dominate weaker nations and expand their influence. This domination is called imperialism, which is still practiced today in moderation. Among the many countries shaped by imperialism were India and China. These two large countries were both colonized by the British who were one of the greatest imperialistic powers at that time.
They also have a higher standard of living, better sanitation, and a better means of transportation (Doc4). In addition, the coming of the British brought an end to the slave trade, infanticide, and brought the value of India’s exportation trade up (Doc5). The British used the idea of “White Man’s Burden” in order to bring civilization and justice to the “barbarians” and westernize them in a way. The British also brought free trade into India and while they were there became one of the wealthiest countries because of everything being extracted out of it. Lastly, the British kept peace on the region and introduced Western technologies.
Through the East India Company, Britain also came to control India. Through the course of the 19th century, the British government ruled India, known as the British Raj. During this time, the people of India began to revolt. One example being the Sepoy Rebellion was due to Sepoys unhappiness with the pay inequality compared to British soldiers as well as the suspicion of rifle cartridges with animal fats, which conflicted their religion. Despite the thousands of killed Sepoys, the Sepoy Rebellion opened a new council for Indians in government and removed the East India Company.
Dr.Lalvani claims that under British rule, India was modernized, giving the foundation for a government that therefore gave law and order. While this system and others were built, they were built almost entirely for British benefit and even profit. In this new government, Indians had no say in the laws being decided by the British, that were impacting them. The laws were meant to further control Indians, while the British extracted India’s wealth and flood India’s markets with textiles with the help of railroads. Wanting more and more wealth, the British logged forests to create land to grow cash crops which in the end degraded the soil making it more difficult for them to grow.
According to the spread of imperialism, many empires use military force or coercion to control other countries actively, then to build colonies in other countries. Those practices of empire are so called ‘Imperialism’. Imperialism has become the driving force of many important historical events since ancient time. Before we trying to consider many important global issues, such as globalization, income gap etc. We should have belief understanding to the cause of those issues.
They gave them no say in their taxation at all. Britain rule was bad because it made the Indians extremely poor and left them with no money for food. It also impacted India in a negative way because all their soil for farming was destroyed and they also built railroads right in the middle of the towns. These railroads were used to benefit Britain because it made shipping materials and trade easier for them. Lastly, British rule caused lots of deaths from famine.
The British first came to India not only because of the abundance of raw materials, but also the mass potential they seen. The British East India Company, took advantage of the collapsing Mughal Empire, and broke away from their control to flourished their company. In 1857 the Sepoy army rebelled and that caused the British to come in guns blazing and take over the country. The British rule demolished India through, taxation on anything made in India, and the exportation of raw materials, which caused a plentiful amount of famine, and throughout all of this, the British kept most on India uneducated, and those they did educate, most were forced to become interpreters for the benefits it would make in taking over India and keeping the British in control. Political Paragraph British imperialism had a negative effect on the politics of India because of the corrupt justice system, and the utter lack of respect that killed masses of innocent people.
