Social media are web-based communication tools that enable people to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information (Nations, 2017). Nowadays, the demand for the use of social media is undoubtedly increasing because it comes down to a simple basic human desire: the need to connect with other humans, to be part of a group. One of the most popular social media platforms is Facebook. It is a social networking website and service where users can post comments, share photographs and links to news or other interesting content on the Web, play games, chat live, and even stream live video (Nations, 2016). One can show off their talents or assets through Facebook. One of the benefits of Facebook is that it allows the user to display them, as they actively want to be seen. This was backed up by a study entitled Mirror, Mirror On My Facebook Wall: Effects of Exposure to Facebook on Self-Esteem conducted by Cornell University. In the study, 63 students were left alone in a university lab at a computer. The computers were either turned off or showing the student's Facebook page. Some of the computers that were turned off also had a mirror propped against the screen. Those who were on Facebook were allowed to spend three minutes reviewing their page and then all of the students were given a questionnaire to measure their self-esteem. The students who were on Facebook gave more positive feedback about themselves than the other two groups, according to the article. Those who had made a change to their profile gave themselves the highest marks (Hancock, 2011). Facebook also lets a person receive support from like-minded individual. This is possible through the use of Facebook Groups. These can be a great place for people to come together around a combined subject or cause. Groups can be built around a topic or subject in your industry; a mastermind; a community cause; or a group of paid members for a program or service. When you opt to participate in a social network community, you can pick and choose individuals whose likes and dislikes are …show more content…
One of the disadvantages of using Facebook is cyber bullying. In 2013, British publication Mail Online named Facebook the worst social network when it comes to bullying. According to them the main target of Facebook bullies are male 19-year olds. Of all the cases of cyber bullying reported 87% of them were done through Facebook. Fortunately, to counteract as much of the Facebook bullying as possible pages have been created on the social networking site to discourage people from bullying others. Bullyingisviolence and nobullying.com are two active Facebook pages that work to stop this problem. Another Facebook downfall is the spread of fake news since its easy to make a Facebook page or profile. The spread of fake news can lead to major miscommunication and misconceptions to the intended audience of the event. However, Just last month, Facebook teamed up with Google to help stop the spread of fake news through the Fact Check. The "Fact Check" label identifies articles that include information fact checked by news publishers and fact-checking
Sunstein says it is proven that “Facebook users tended to choose and share stories containing messages they accept, and to neglect those they reject.” This in turn, promotes lies or one sided ideas.
Author and editor of two magazines, Lauren Tarshis in the essay, Is Facebook Making You Mean?, published on September 5, 2011 in a classroom magazine addresses the topic of online bullying through the popular social networking site, Facebook, and argues that these sites should be used responsibly to ensure the safety of all users. Tarshis supports her claim first by providing incidents and facts that prove the immense effects rude comments and thoughtless jokes have on the person receiving them. Second by, making an emotional appeal to her audience which creates a unity between the reader and writer. Finally by, establishing her credibility as a writer by providing an extensive amount of educated assertions supported by scientific studies.
I disagree with Dailey’s results; strong friendships and bonds can be created over social media. Some people lack the social skills needed to make friends with their next door neighbor or the person standing next to them in their local market. “Facebook may not replace the full benefits of real friendship, but it definitely beats the alternative” (Dailey 144). For these people, Facebook is the perfect venue to get to know someone that they
and while this number is fairly large it does not inherently mean it increases the amount of bullying as people have used every means of communication to do such things before (Doc F). it has been left uncertain if websites such as social networking sites can be included in the “school environment”. Schools should have the ability to provide a healthy environment for everyone involved but they cannot do so without having a clear legal position that they can

An ethical dilemma happens when two or more ethical principles conflict with one another. Ethical dilemmas are problematic situations in which it is not clear which choice will be the right one. The CP is stuck as to what to do next because there is not just one outcome that will satisfy the ethical principles as stated in the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) Code of Ethics (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2012). According to the SASW (2017), the core values of social work are embedded in the ethical responsibilities, which are relevant to the professional activities of social workers.

Social media is a truly unique concept that gives a person the ability to construct their identity any way they please. Many different social media outlets exist and give people the opportunity to present themselves using different models. Facebook (arguably the most popular social media site), prompts users to construct their identity in a way that reflects their true self. While many people use real names and information about themselves, it is not difficult to create a completely new persona. Other popular sites like Twitter and Instagram encourage users to create an identity using abstract forms of expression such as photography.
The Use of Social Networking Nowadays, we are living under decent technology and it has changed a lot of things: Entertainment, communication, and relationship; economy, education, and habit; medical, political and cultural etc. Social media has allowed us to interact with many more people other than we are used to before. We are living in a world where people would rather use text message with their mobile phone than face-to-face to each other, share greeting with more than hundreds of friends on the social media such as upload how they feel on Facebook, show photo Instagram, and what they are doing with Snapchat.
Information and communication technology has seen lot of changes and advancements since the year 2000, key among them being the development of social media as a social influencer. It has become prominent parts of life for many young people today. We are all aware that social media has had a tremendous impact on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large and social media websites are some of the most popular haunts on the internet. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or negative. Facebook is one of the most currently relevant and widespread platforms for social networking. Facebook is a social media device which allows its users to connect with friends, family, coworkers, and the entire public.
