Beep. Beep. “Uhh why do I have to go school, it’s so early in the morning.” This is a common phrase said by students that wake up early and have to go to school early. Should schools start later?
The alarm clock screeches. I read the clock it says 5:00a.m. I tell myself if I don't get up, I never will. Im tired because I stayed up all night studying for my biology test. Im starving to death.
Many surrounding cities and towns are starting to implement later start times for middle and high school students. Many of these schools are finding positive outcomes. Some reasons for these positive outcomes include improved learning and health and students being more awake. Provided it is implemented properly, students should be able to get more sleep, otherwise it could have negative effects. Maybe changing school start times for Windham would benefit the students learning.
I think School should start later in the day. For instant less kids will be grumpy because they get extra sleep. No kids sleeping in class, means the teachers will be happier. Also more kids will be prepared in the morning for school.
I’m pretty sure most people hate getting up super early in the morning to get to school. Am I right? Well I think it’s the worst! In my opinion, I think school should start later because it is better for one’s health and it’s better for students’ concentration in class.
Later High school start time are linked to academic performance. According to Sifferlin,in When Sleep and School Don’t Mix, the school has seen so many improvements among student since it required them to be at school start later. The percentage of late students dropped around 3% from the 2011-2012 school year to to the 2013-2014 school year. For the last few years, schools across the United States have made conscious efforts to delay school start times. The push for a later school start has been led by doctors and parents who believe students do not receive the suggested eight-and-a-half hours of sleep daily. A later start time does not guarantee more sleep for students as students may just go to bed even later usual. A later start time could also change the times for after-school activities for many students. As a result of a later start time, both students and teachers will come home to families late into night.
School Should Start Later A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that 60% of children under the age of 18 complained of being tired during the day, according to their parents, and 15% said they fell asleep at school during the year. This proves that kids aren’t getting enough sleep before school. I believe that a later middle school start time would have many beneficial effects on kids. As a result, kids would be more focused in class because they would be getting more sleep, that would lead to better grades, and finally reduced absenteeism.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine asserts that early school days lead to accidents along the roads, depression among the young teenagers, and upsurge in poor performance academically for middle and high school students. Teens struggle through the challenge of waking up very early in the morning so that they can be at school at the right time. Research implies that teens should get at least eight to nine hours of night sleep for their good health. Various sponsors such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control have the strong advice on why schools should start later. Nevertheless, by being able to sleep more before school starts, students will be able to become well rested, more attentive in classroom settings, and perform better as learners.
Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. Some schools are deciding to begin later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks. I believe that schools should begin and end later in the day. Schools should begin and end later in the day because students would be more alert in their class, students would be more interactive in class, and students would get better grades. First, students would be more alert in their classes.
Schools should start later because that way students could get more hours of sleep. Otherwise, students will start to get bad grades in school, there athletic performance might decrease and they would feel different about themselves. Plus health experts recommend that students should get at least nine hours of sleep every night to work their best. Also students are extremely stressed in the morning and have rushing to get to school on time, which causes more stress at school. Imagine this, usually you get 8 hours of sleep every night, but then basketball season starts and you start practicing every night.
School should start later because they get more sleep. Get to school on time. Make fewer trips to the school nurse. Students get to eat breakfast. Reduced risk of car accidents.
Teenagers all over the country are struggling with their sleep. They struggle to get out of bed every day. The weekend is their only break. Why is this, schools start too early. School start times should be later.
