During this day and age, there is definitely without a doubt that the bond between citizens nowadays and the improving technology has strengthen. People’s dependence on technology increases rapidly every day, from performing simple tasks such as preparing breakfast or doing housework to playing major and significant roles in a country’s defence system. Despite all the advantages that technology has brought us, there is an abundance of claims that people’s dependence on technology has affected creativity and communication nowadays in both positive and negative ways. According to the Oxford dictionary, creativity is defined as the use of imagination or original idea to create something. In other words, originality is the backbone of creativity. And how does society interpret what is deemed original? In my humble opinion, originality is somewhat more similar to a spectrum, with new, fresh ideas on one side and more unoriginal ideas on the other. If we judge this term too strictly and seriously, originality would just be nothing but a mere illusion that no one could ever achieve, as everything that exist has already been done, and the ideas that everyone has are just borrowed and used without them even realising it. Needless to say, modern technology has definitely created ripples on an individual’s creativeness. Thanks to the mass media, like the Internet, we are constantly exposed to new ideas every single day. For instance, social websites are sharing and promoting every new ideas every single day. Under the influence of the media, we subconsciously ‘steal’ a small portion of the others’ concepts here and there, and injecting it into our own work. The thing is, the Internet can be accessed by anyone, regardless of age, gender or class. It enables us to have a better understanding of those who are around us. Technology has arguably improved the efficiency of communication. From pigeon carriers to telegraphs and to the modern-day messenger apps, technology has made it easier for people from different places to communicate. People are able to see the faces of their loved ones even though they are far apart from each other, those who are working can conduct business with clients from other countries, all from the tip of their fingers. Nowadays, with programmes and applications such as Facebook, Skype and Whatsapp, communicating with one another has never been much easier. These applications and programmes also function as a double-edged sword, benefiting the user on one side while at the same time causing harm on the other. Those who have no self- control will often find themselves overly attached to their own gadgets, swiping their Facebook feed or chatting with their friends 24/7 during family dinners or other social activities, decreasing their physical interaction with their friends and family and placing their digital friends in front of those who really matters.
