Introduction
After apartheid, the south African government have employed various enabling techniques as mechanisms through which it aims to reduce and eradicate poverty and inequality in South Africa. There are formulated strategies for poverty that have been introduced post 1994 with significant programs planned for the future. Reconstruction and development program (RDP), the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA), White Paper on Social Welfare and most recently the National Development Plan (NDP) are the few examples that the government have employed post 1994 to eradicate and reduce poverty in South Africa.
This assignment will not mainly focus on the programs that have been employed by our government in fighting this phenomenon of poverty, but will rather focus on poverty and inequalities that are still very much present in our societies. Davids, Theron and Maphunye reveal that poverty is wrongly perceived in our societies, as societies associate poverty with “starving children, overcrowded informal settlements and ragged street children” (2005: 37). Resources are kept and allocated to the minority while the masses are living in poor infrastructure in our South African societies. With current South African government in corruption allegations and minister of finance announcing VAT increases, one could only guess about the dire implications this has on the poverty-stricken families. These are families that struggle for daily meals, their functioning is impacted by the VAT increase but the government passed the VAT increase policy without the public’s opinion and leaving the poor more disadvantaged.
