Secularization is a phenomena that has become almost synonymous with modernity. This essay will argue that secularization has had negative effects on religion, but positive effects on individuals. Using examples from both secular and non-secular societies, this essay will show the effect that secularization has had on both the individual and religion in general.
Although people are aware that secularization is a phenomena that has taken hold on many societies, there is no consensus on a definition of the word. According to José Casanova, there are three ways to define secularization: as a decline in religion, the privatization of religion, or as the separation of church and state. This essay will view secularization through the ‘privatization

Secularization has lead to a shift in religion from being objective to being subjective. Therefore, every individual has the right to make their own decisions about how they practice their religion. This leads to religion being less influential as well as a plurality of religions in society. This plurality leads religions to be almost in competition with each other as no one religion has the monopoly. Due to secularization, Berger states that religions have become almost institutionalized, and marketed as a business would market a product. Religions become more flexible, and less attached to their roots, as they try to attract people. It is almost as if people were customers and the religion was the product being marketed to them. This way, religion loses its essence and it stops becoming about the religion and starts becoming simply about attracting people to it. The basic foundations of a religion might fade away as compromises are made in order to make it attractive to the …show more content…
This idea can be taken too far, such as in the example of banning the hijab in some European countries. Religious institutions are not seen as being as important as they once were. This can lead to disadvantages to religious institution as well as to religious people. Religious freedom might be violated in favor of a total exclusion of religion.
Conclusion
Secularization has both positive and negative effects, but it can be seen that the positive effects outweigh the negative ones. The positive effects affect a larger strata of society than the negative ones do. The positive effects, such as the shift of knowledge from studying the divine word to research, help progress science and society. The increased freedom of religion is also a positive effect for both individuals and religion. However, if the exclusion of religion goes too far, it can end up infringing on the rights of religious
In order to focus on the foundation of religions, locations and time of events are limited to the minimum. It “does not attept to give a rounded view of the religions considered.” (p.2) It tried to do reasonable justice to several perspectives instead of attempting to catalogue many types. What impact has Secularism and ‘New Age’ religions in Australia had on the Australian religious Landscape? Overview: With secularism present within the Australian constitution, religion is faced with the threat of fading into oblivion. Secularism is the principle of separation of religious institutions and state. This has allowed for a rapid increase of irreligious Australians and non catholic religions. With the modernisation of Australian society, new age religions have arisen.
Patel wants everyone to embrace the many different religions that we have while believing that they all can coexist in the community “I realized that it was precisely because of America’s glaring imperfections that I should seek to participate in its progress, carve a place in its promise, and play a role in its possibility. And at its heart and at its best, America was about pluralism” (Patel 89). Patel says that pluralism should be embraced and individuals should have a better understanding of one’s religion before mistaking. These mistakes can lead to disputes and ultimately to pandemonium characterized in this text.
Perhaps, the most frightening aspect of this book is the ever-darkening depravity of American culture. Honestly, if a reader traces the opponents of fundamentalism through the work, they find a disturbing trend that explains why America is facing the problems she’s facing today. Slowly but surely, those who hold to fundamentalism are becoming fewer in number. Now, most well-educated people would not know what fundamentalism is or (more importantly) what it stands for. Small wonder America is going to Hell in a handbasket (pardon my
Society’s values were challenged by new viewpoints of traditionalism as the old ways faded. It was easy for an individual to be absorbed into these new viewpoints and to question their beliefs. Again, this trial took a huge toll on people and many widespread changes arose in culture and throughout American society. Individuals began to reject religion and accepted these new viewpoints of modernism. This process of traditional views being rejected is still happening today, this has been evolving over a long period of time, starting in the 20’s.
For this reason, an increasing amount of conflict arises and shapes a person’s prejudice. Religion constructs its follower’s ideology which puts
Religion is important for a society to function. Sociologist focus on religion as an institution or system followed by a group, based on what they interpret is sacred to this group. Furthermore, depicts the reasoning on how southerners in America have established their conservative values. These values will determine the foundation of southern culture past from generations to their roles in society. During the 16th hundreds and 18th hundreds religion was huge, and was very important. However from the 16th and 18th hundreds people realised that the people should have a right for the different laws and rules that were being made. The 16th and 18th hundreds have allowed many people to realise that the government wasn’t the only people who had the rights to make up the laws. Most laws were made from Christians, which explains the laws of being a good person and doing what was told in the name of God. Religion played a major role in the development of democracy and mercantilism in the 16th to the 18th century, since it created of new nation based upon self-reliance, self-motivation, and self-government.
Nowadays, our church’s beliefs have changed a lot. They emphasize more on individual conscience instead of rules and preventions. In the old days, the churches were more strict and demanding. Today, churches are more lenient and they provide moral motivations and self-understanding. The twentieth century perceived many challenges to reconcile religious belief with new features of philosophical thinking and new ideas in
Like most things that are society based, religion has evolved alongside our own culture. America is a melting pot of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures making it a perfect place for religion to adapt and flourish. For this analysis, I am drawing from “Civil Religion in America” by Robert N. Bellah (1967) on his ideas of American civil religion. In the text Bellah (1967) argues that civil religion is an important dimension that needs to be recognized in sociology. While Bellah focuses specifically on the United States of America, he still gives a valuable perspective on civil religion and how it plays a part in religion as a whole.
Without the limitations the government would punish people of different beliefs more harsh than someone without. “Court cases that address freedom of religion have dealt with the rejection of prayer in public schools, the denial of aid to parochial schools, the banning of polygamy (the practice of having more than one wife), the restriction of poisonous snakes and drugs in religious rites and limiting the right to decline medical
(Document 1) This has changed a lot today in the US because now, if you don’t follow the most popular religion within your city, there will be no shame among you or your family. Now most people believe that with believing in religion comes more freedom with their own thoughts. Believing in a certain religion creates an escape from stress and it isn’t as strictly followed in most households in

2. Religion 2.1. Definition of Religion Religion is a set of beliefs, morals, and values that people practice to guide their lives in a spiritual manner. In the book Beyond Tractability it says religion serves as a way for people to distinguish themselves from others. Just like the way people use ethnic groups and race to distinguish themselves from others. Religion now serves the same purpose [2]. So now just like the way we have racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination, there is religious discrimination. NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF RELIGION ON SOCIETY
