WORMHOLE AND TIME-TRAVEL Aakanshya Mishra BSc. 1st Year ABSTRACT: Things don’t happen in reverse? Why? Sounds absurd - but why? Why, exactly, it is impossible to unbreak an egg? Why can’t we unmelt an ice? Similarly, why can’t we unburn the matches and unsprain the ankles? Why can’t we mix up yesterday and tomorrow? We only get older, not younger. Trees only get taller, they don’t return to acorns. Our sun only ever uses up its fuel, never returning to a cool ball of hydrogen. Time only goes in one direction but why is it impossible for us to reverse the clocks? CONTEXT: Like many of the stories about physics, this one starts with Isaac Newton. These paths, called Einstein- Rosen bridges or wormholes, connect two different points in space-time, theoretically creating a shortcut that could reduce travel time and distance. A wormhole or “Einstein- Rosen Bridge" is a hypothetical geometric feature that would fundamentally be a shortcut connecting two separate points in space time. A wormhole may connect extremely long distances such as two galaxies, short distances such as a few feet, and different points in time. A wormhole is much like a tunnel with two ends, each at separate points in space time. Wormholes contain two mouths, with a throat connecting the two. The mouths would most likely be roughly spherical. The throat might be a straight stretch, but it could also wind around, taking a longer path than a more ordinary route might require. Einstein’s theory of general relativity mathematically predicts the existence of wormholes, but none have been discovered to date. “A wormhole is not really a means of going back in time, it’s a shortcut, so that something that was far away is much closer” NASA’s Eric Christian wrote. Although adding exotic matter to a wormhole might stabilize it to the point that human passengers could travel safely through it, there is still the possibility that the addition of “regular” matter would be sufficient to destabilize the entrance. Today’s technology is insufficient to enlarge or stabilize wormholes, even if they could be found. However, scientists continue to explore the concept as a method of space travel with the hope that technology will eventually be able to utilize them. Everything today discovered in the field of science is the outcome of power of imagination. The imagination of space-time, time travel and wormholes done by the great scientists are immense to reveal the secrets of the universe.
