Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera also known as El Chapo was born on December 25, 1954, or, he might have been born on April 4, 1957. He got the name El Chapo (The Shorty) because of his height (5 ft. 6 in.). His father was officially a cattle rancher, as were most in the area where Guzmán grew up; according to some sources, however, he may have possibly also been a gomero, a Sinaloan word for opium poppy farmer. Guzmán has two younger sisters, Armida and Bernarda, and four younger brothers: Miguel Ángel, Aureliano, Arturo and Emilio. He had three unnamed older brothers who reportedly died of natural causes when he was very young. As a child, he sold oranges, but after awhile he dropped out of school when he was in third grade to help his father and work for him. He is known for drug trafficking, violence, and extortion. Espudo has been involved in the Mexican Mafia by encouraging other gangs to pay “taxes” to the main Mexican Group, “La Eme”. Paying taxes the smaller groups in order to get supplies such as illegal substances to sell. Espudo played a leading role in his gang that was under the protection of the Mexican Mafia.
