Abuse to the Elderly and its Implications to the Nursing Practice
The elderly are subjected to abuse all over around the world, either in their homes, in the relatives’ homes where they have been put up or in nursing homes. Their abusers are close family members and relatives, spouses, doctors, attorneys, professional caregivers as well as strangers. This abuse normally goes unnoticed as the elderly do not have a platform through which they can express the predicaments they go through, and according to Podnieks, it was until recently that it came to public attention though it have been known to exist (cited in Momirov & Durfrey, 2011). This is as a result of increase in number of gerontologists and “previous discoveries of child and wife battering” (Momirov & Durfrey, 2011). Elder abuse has been categorized into various types such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, financial abuse and neglect. This paper

The family members thus stand to gain from a larger inheritance. This may also be attained by deceit, coercion and persuasion or colluding with unethical attorneys (Jackson & Hafemeister, 2013). When fraudsters make calls to the elderly informing them that they have won a prize of which they are required to send a certain amount of money to in order to collect, it is still categorized as financial abuse. In other cases, fraudsters cheat the elderly out of their money by persuading them to contribute to charities which do not exist Elderly men are prone to be financial abuse by young women who may take advantage their loneliness by pretending to be attracted to them. Once acquainted, they take control of the victim’s accounts and/or property and use them as they wish (Mornirov & Durfrey, 2011).
Lucy Morgan enrolled in an online dating service which, she says, promised to set young women up on dates. After using the service for a period of time, Ms. Morgan discovered several of her co-workers and others had actually been sent out on dates with the same men. She continued by stating she discovered some of the men were not only married, but related to the owner. She then concluded by accusing the owner, Mr. Paul Rambin, of fraud and misrepresentation. Mr. Rambin refuted the claims by stating he did not guarantee marriage and he did not process background checks on the members as declared on his website.
These efforts are focused on federal and state agencies offering fraud protection education to senior citizens through workshops, emails, and postal mailings (Swanson et al., 2012, p. 424). According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (2010), crimes affecting the elderly are based on many factors such as they often have good credit, have a nest egg, and own their own homes. In addition, seniors were raised in a different era where they were taught to be polite and trusting, leaving them susceptible to fraudulent promises of others. Cognitive impairments of this aging population also make them more attractive since they may not be able to supply investigators with enough information to build a case against the perpetrator
Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers, nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others, however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse, another example is abuse by strangers, when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes, they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.
abuse: When the service user lives with the carer, it may increase the chances for abuse to occur as this situation may cause stress and resentment if the carer feels he/she cannot cope. Not properly trained staff who do not receive any supervision or support at work, as well as stressed staff who are going through personal problems, or who do not like working in the care sector, may increase the risk of an individual being abused. In addition, patients who are not mobile, are confused, suffer from dementia or are aggressive or challenging, may also present an increase for the risk of an individual being abused, since the carer
The United States government is doing a surprisingly little amount for the million of elderly who are being abused everyday. An affective abuse policy increasing elderly protection services is immensely needed. The public should also be informed about elderly abuse, and the individuals who commit the crime of abusing the elderly should have stricter punishments. People in society can help towards pushing for a more goal driven elder justice policy. In the article, “The Elderly Must Be Protected From Abuse,” author Robert B. Blancato explains seven goals which should be addressed towards elderly justice.
At Adult Protective Services majority of our work involves investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. At Adult Protective Services our job is to protect the vulnerable elderly population, as well as the population that have disabilities. “Only APS is statutorily authorized and responsible for investigating elder and vulnerable adult abuse and taking steps to protect the victims, and it is generally only APS that helps the most frail and incapacitated older persons”(Quin, 2012, p.68). When abuse is suspected, a case worker will reach out to all parties involved, such as the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and all collaterals. Unlike many other professions, case worker are not required to have any written consent to speak with
Hillier and Barrow (2015), associate problems of caregiving with the responsibility itself, the caregivers personal health, role strains, strained family relationships, ect. With all of this strain on an informal caregiver it seems most beneficial to the caregiver and the elderly individual to consider admittance in to an assisted living facility. Once a basis has been established as to why an elderly person is admitted in to an assisted living facility, further insight shall be established to denote what is considered elder abuse. In this movie, Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities, several
Prospective JD candidate Jane Black analyzes the issue of elder abuse in her article “The Not-So-Golden Years: Power Of Attorney, Elder Abuse, And Why Our Laws Are Failing A Vulnerable Population” (particularly the financial aspect) and creates a solution to the glaring issues that plague the system meant to protect the elderly. Black uses three main points to produce an accurate look at the issues at hand. First, elderly people are particularly vulnerable to abuse making them easy targets. Second, the laws that are meant to keep the elderly safe are weak, thus enabling more abuse. Third, by creating stronger laws and programs, elder abuse can be curbed very easily.
On the other hand emotional and sexual harassment to the girls specially may be done by the people. The age is a crucial matters for performing particular abuses. The people can do harm to disable or mental people with financial or non-financial types of neglect. The harm can be made at any time depending on the situation of the individuals (Green and Kreutzer, 2013).
3.1. Explain existing working practice and strategies designed to minimise abuse in health and social care contexts Adult Protection Tactics Many working practices are applied minimising abuse in Health and Social Care Sectors- Adams (2007) states that "in England, multiagency codes of practice aiming to tackle and prevent abuse of vulnerable adults developed in the light of the publication of the official guidance No Secrets (DOH and Home Office, 2000)". Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) Adams (2007) states that "The protection of vulnerable adults (POVA) scheme was introduced in England and Wales in a phased programme from 2004, as required in the Care Standard Act 2000".
In the last few decades, seniors have been the targets of financial scams more frequently than any other age group. Why? Not only do scammers believe that seniors have money just sitting in their bank accounts, but the types of financial scams they tend to perpetrate are extremely difficult to prosecute and frequently go unreported. Worse still, it’s not always a stranger who’s behind the crime: research shows that 90% of all elder abuse-including financial scams-is committed by a family member. Now, there’s some good news.
Relationship abuse is a pattern of coercive and abusive behaviors. Most of the time when abuse goes on during a relationship, it is kept a secret because the victim is afraid of telling. The behaviors that go on are to maintain total control over a spouse or an intimate partner. Relationship is a choice or in other words it’s a learned behavior. Most abusers believe that they can do what they want and get away with it.
Elder abuse can be referred to as a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Elderly people often get abuse by people who should be their protector and carer, in most circumstances many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. If you suspect that an elderly person is at risk from a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver, or being preyed upon financially, it’s important to speak up. Learning about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem it’s very vital in protecting the elderly from abuse, some of these abuse are; • Not caring for someone property (neglect) • Pressuring
The Emotional Abusing and being abused in Roy’s The God of Small Things Misuse of power and mistreatment of the powerless is abusing; the abuse may start with the infliction of physical, sexual, financial, verbal or emotional violence. Any sort of abuse will be apparently obvious to the abuser and the abused; but it is very difficult for the persons who experience emotional abuse to identify that they are being abused; since the emotionally agitated abuser fails to sympathise the other whereas the unaware victim comprehends neither the intension of the abuser nor the effects of the abuse. Abusing especially emotionally distressing is a serious social evil since it makes the victim socially incompetent. Both children and adult are encountering mental torment that is more vicious than physical abuse. Emotional Abuse is a psychological distress imposed on a submissive by ignoring, denying, aggressing, blaming, humiliating, belittling, bullying and rebuking.
Saudi Arabia’s Domestic Abuse Ad “Advertising is the ability to sense, interpret... to put the very heart throbs of a business into type, paper and ink” by Leo Burnett. In the year of 2013, Scott Abbott did exactly that by publishing Saudi Arabia’s very first domestic violence ad. The slogan in the image was “Some things cannot be covered,” along with a list of telephone number to local domestic abuse shelters. The woman in the advertisement is wearing a burqa.
