Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Changes in the world are evident for the past century. These changes were brought by modernization. Modernization made social changes, from being an agricultural society to being an industrial society. In line with this, technology has also become a great benefactor of the modernization. While society is improving, technology also grows bigger and better. One of the most vital periods for industrial innovation was between the 14th century and 17th century. Many technologies were created and designed during this era. Not another century came when important technologies were invented and developed. This is engineered to imitate the mammalian olfactory system and was also designed to identify and classify aromas. Electronic nose technology has been significantly used for the past decade. This technology has been under researches and studies to find out its uses and applications in a certain field in which odor is a great matter. Some of its uses have been tested in various field such as in food manufacturing. This electronic nose was used in food analysis because of its reactiveness as like of a human sensory judgment and interpretation and also, eNose offers shorter time to evaluate the samples. Not only that, in some articles, some have proved the vast application of eNose in advancing the commercial industries, agricultural industry, and other scientific fields like it was used in the field of medicine. In the food industry, its uses are limitless. In most of the food companies, raw materials are not frequently checked but rather the final product to see if an off-odor is present. They may find this difficult to identify if the raw materials used are the reason if a problem arise after the production of the final product but with the use of eNose as a quality control tool to check raw materials, the problem can be avoided.
