However as they mature in their journeys, then they become more aware of their passions and become self-aware of their identities: There are many people that are all about engineering. But the people that decided to stick with the engineering track because of other reasons such as financial obligations towards family, that’s primarily what it is, then [I encourage them to] know how to use engineering [while pursuing their passions outside of engineering]. I have always had a love for science and this passion made me choose engineering as a profession. I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. I am the first of three children, my younger brother works in an I.T firm while my sister is studying to be a medical doctor. Since I was a little boy, physics and chemistry has been the driving force of my curiosity towards all things around me. My father, who is an engineer and a Professor of Chemical Engineering himself, supported this interest and helped me in learning the basic applications of physics to things around me.
When I first started in high school I had one dream in mind, I was going to be an engineer. 8th grade is when I started to see what engineering was. I researched all the different types and the one that interested me the most was aerospace engineering. I thought it was so cool because they designed things like airplanes and spaceships and missiles. I could see myself in the future, working on a new spaceship for Nasa, or designing the most efficient airplane Boeing had ever seen.
Since my school days, my best quality has been my curiosity. My keen interest in learning new ideas, when combined with my inner desire to reach a degree of excellence in every endeavor, enabled me to acquire significant knowledge in various aspects of nature and technology. My undivided attention towards computer science goes back to the time I was in school. This interest has only grown through the years, as I have learnt more and more about the subject. Consequently, I took part in a discussion group of senior high school teachers who motivated me to opt for computer science as my career.
I had a compulsion for the design and fabrication of automobiles since my early school years. When I matured into the high school years, I took a liking for Physics and Mechanics. Even at that age I could not imagine myself other than a mechanical or an automobile engineer in life. After enrolling into an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering, I slowly discovered my interests and ambitions in my life. One of them is to research in automobile technology and to design my own automobile or an Ariel vehicle.
My intention for graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering is to prepare myself for the long term ambition of pursuing a career in research and development. My father, despite being a government service holder, has always inspired me to cherish my ambition and to stay focused. Also his teaching of understanding concepts and analyzing logically has helped me immensely in the long run. In the pursuit of knowledge, I have constantly adopted a meticulous approach to achieve a detailed understanding of the topic. My passion towards science eventually drove me towards the best engineering school of my country, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
This program, with provided me with an opportunity to delve deeper into this field and gain fundamental knowledge of the sub-disciplines. Being a passionate experimentalist, it was the laboratory sessions that particularly appealed to me during my undergraduate course. With the guidance and encouragement of my laboratory supervisors, I found myself striving to discover novel and more efficient solutions to problems. And this novel and practical approach was what helped me secure good grades in most lab sessions. Though Mechanical Engineering is perceived to be a strictly technical discipline, my endeavors helped fortify my belief that it is equally a form of art because it requires a creative perspective to unravel previously undiscovered solutions and unlock new horizons.
The exhaustive and exacting nature of undergraduate education in my college has provided me with a preparative background for graduate studies. I am well aware of the fact that a career in research calls for personal commitment and personal sacrifice of time, leisure and immediate reward. My undergraduate study in engineering has convinced me that I have only touched upon the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I wish to undergo a Master’s program to sharpen the focus of my interests before I decided the field in which I would eventually do my doctoral research. I intend to explore emerging areas and take part in inter-disciplinary research ventures as well.
My interest in applied sciences such as engineering finds its roots in my school days. Fundamental concepts of physics and mathematics always provided me with intellectual satisfaction. Study of such subjects expanded the horizons of my thinking. I was always intrigued by the way complex machinery is manufactured, assembled and put to work to form sophisticated systems such as cars, aircrafts and so on. This fueled my curiosity and inspired me to choose courses related to Mechanical Engineering discipline for undergraduate study.
