And even though he was a pioneer in the development of horror and the grotesque in American literature, not that many people think him first and foremost as a Southern writer. He had a unique and dark way of writing. His mysterious style of writing appeals to emotion and drama. Poe's most impressionable works of fiction are gothic. His stories tend to have the same recurring theme of either death, lost love or both. American gothic fiction is a subgenre of gothic fiction. Elements specific to American Gothic include: rationality/rational vs. irrational, puritanism, guilt, Das Unheimliche (strangeness within the familiar as defined by Sigmund Freud), ab-humans, ghosts, monsters, and domestic abjection. The roots of these concepts lay in a past riddled with slavery, a fear of racial mixing (miscegenation), hostile Native American relations, their subsequent genocide, and the daunting wilderness present at the American frontier. American gothic is often devoid of castles and objects which allude to a civilized history. Differentiating between horror and terror is important in the study of these texts. Considered the quintessential American Gothic writer, Poe's epic story, The Fall of the House of Usher (1839) reveals the tragedy of Rodrick Usher, who suffers from a variety of mental health disorders not even invented or named by modern psychology when Poe wrote about them: hyperesthesia (sensory overload), hypochondria, and acute anxiety. It’s a stellar tale sure to disturb and delight the reader. Characteristics of the Gothic include: death and decay, haunted homes/castles, family curses, madness, powerful love/romance, ghosts, and vampires. The genre is said to have become popular in the late 18th century with the publication of Horace Walpole's novel The Castle of Otranto in
One of his major stories is: “The Raven” this story is considered a great American literary work. Poe started to write about death and loss and was very successful with his new theme and style. Some of the most successful stories are: “The Tell Tale Heart,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Masque of the Red Death,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” These stories show how talented Poe was when his stories focused on horror.
In gothic literature, the elements used by the author depicts how the piece of work is going to unfold. Authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Washington Irving depict the themes of psychological issues and entrapment through the short stories: “Black Cat”by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Raven”by Edgar Allan Poe, and “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving. The gothic theme of entrapment is commonly used across various pieces of literature. Entrapment is the idea of being contained by something either physically, mentally, or emotionally.
Impact of Edgar Allan Poe on American Culture “Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality” (Edgar Allan Poe). For many readers, when they hear the name “Edgar Allan Poe” they think of horror and suspense. Additionally, the pictures and themes made by Edgar Allan Poe had a huge impact on the accompanying ages and works of different writers, with the goal that they even moved toward becoming submerged into the pop culture. During this time Edgar Allan Poe was becoming a prosperous writer, two of his most famous works are, “The Raven.” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Therefore to make a living Poe took up other occupations such as a critic and an editorial position. Even though he worked these jobs his passion was for writing. He wrote both poems and short stories. Some examples are ¨The Haunted Palace,¨ a gloomy almost depressing poem that was published in 1839,¨The Raven¨ with its mysterious style and personification which was published in 1845,¨Anabell Lee,¨ a lovefelt poem in remembrance of Poe's wife virginia,¨Eldorado,¨ a bold poem that symbolizes the passage of time and was published in 1849, and ¨The Bells¨ which also symbolizes the passage of time and was published in 1849. Gothic literature and magical realism are different because one is based on supernatural occurrences on Earth while the other is based on scary but natural things on Earth. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of the House of Usher,” Usher 's sister dies in a natural way and so does Usher so nothing unnatural happens. For instance Usher tells the narrator that he buried his sister alive and that he 's been knowing about it for
“He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall” (Poe). Edgar Allan Poe was an American author and poet during the 1800’s (anb). He is known for his gothic style of writing, and tragic tales. Poe has written famous pieces such as The Raven (1845), The Black Cat (1843), and The Tell Tale Heart(1843).
In “The Fall of the House of Usher” the tone gives off an eerie and bizarre feeling. This is similar to many of Poe’s other short stories but this piece the most. The tone is gloomy compared to “The Black Cat” that Poe has also written. The author starts off the story with immense details of the setting. The readers get a dark vibe from these details.
“ The Fall of the House of Usher “ by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story about a man named Roderick Usher who initiates some events such as evoking his friend The Narrator as a protagonist to the dreadful mansion. The images such as the house and gothic ambience are used to reinforce the idea of giving the mystery to the reader. One of Edgar Allan Poe’s most known attributes is his use of fear in many of his stories. He used words and images to instill the fright into his readers. Edgar Allen Poe was an American poet, born in Boston, January 18, 1808. Poe is remembered for his poetry and short stories, especially for his tales of mystery and macabre. My favorite work done by Poe is The Tell-Tale Heart. I was first introduced to Poe’s work in High school, I read many of his poems then, but, The Tell- Tale Heart has to be my favorite over them all. He fills you with such suspense in his poems.
Gothic Elements in the “The Tell Tale Heart” The classic short story of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, written by one of the all time masters of horror, Edgar Allen Poe, has always been used as an excellent example of Gothic fiction. Edgar Allen Poe specialized in the art of gothic writing and wrote many stories that portrayed disturbing events and delved deeply into the minds of its characters. In "The Tell-Tale Heart," Poe revolves the plot around a raving individual who, insisting that he is sane, murders an old man because of his` “vulture eye”. The three main gothic elements that are evident in this story are the unique setting, the theme of death and decay, and the presence of madness.
Born in Boston in 1809, Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most influential American writers of his age. He died in mysterious circumstances in 1849 and, even though he dedicated himself to both fiction and poetry, he is mainly remembered for his revolutionary novels. Although Poe’s short stories are considered gothic stories, they go beyond the convention of this genre. In fact, while in most of the gothic stories mystery comes from the outside world, in Poe’s stories the causes of horror and misfortunes spring from the mind of the characters themselves and are the result of the complex nature of man.
During the 1800s Dark Romanticism, sometimes referred to as Gothic Romanticism, entered the world of literature. Unlike the writings before this time, Dark Romanticism showed the sinful thoughts that had not been previously shown in the world. Unlike the previous fiction stories or novels such as fairytales that used creative, positive stories to escape reality, these dark and sometimes supernatural writings eluded reality by taking its readers into disturbing and sometimes sacrilegious situations. Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne both used symbols to illustrate elements of Dark Romanticism. The symbols within the stories of these great writers revealed the impending darkness and gloom that characterized Dark Romanticism.
Gothic Literature is a genre that was popular between 18th to 19th centuries in North Germany. It is always being associated with Dark Romanticism which the emphasize was more on nature, terror and death, horror and many more. It involves dark and gloomy setting and also unexplainable things that are beyond human senses and reason such as ghosts and monsters. The main characters, on the other hand, are always ineffectual which they do not give much effect on the story plot. This can be seen through Washington Irving’s “Rip van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” which can be considered as American gothic work in terms of its description of setting, the involvement of supernatural element in the story and also the characteristics of the main character.
