Alexander Hamilton once said, “There is a certain Enthusiasm in liberty that makes Human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” Beowulf is an epic poem in which the main character Beowulf did acts of service, but he fought for those who couldn’t fight. The overall theme of good versus evil in Beowulf had Beowulf dealing with challenges that no ordinary man would be able to handle unless they were a true epic hero. Throughout the poem Beowulf proves to be an epic hero by his strength, bravery, and sacrifice. Beowulf is an epic hero because of his strength. His strength isn’t the same as an ordinary man, “He twisted in pain and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped muscle and on split and broke” (lines 337-340).
As heroes start their journey they enter a new world full of strange creatures, scary scenes and regular threat of death. They are quickly adapted to these new conditions that are unlike their ordinary world as this tests their mettle, strength, and whether they’re gusty enough to face these supernatural creatures or not (Hamby 2). Scott T. Allison and George R. Goethals argued that gallantry and flexibility are the most inspiring and important traits for the success of the heroic journey, as hero’s courage is necessary for fighting his enemies and completing his journey (“How Hero Stories” 1). In the ancient ages, the huddling of tribes from different regions around the fire wasn’t only for food, warmth, and security, it was also for listening to heroic stories that allayed fear and worry from people’s hearts and strengthened their spirits and souls (Allison and Goethals, “Did The Advent” 1), and this shows that the hero’s valor didn’t only help him to face his enemies and challenges, it also inspired people’s souls and encouraged them to act bravely in their daily
“You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor” said Aristotle. Courage is an act of bravery one does that is frightening yet they still persevere. Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.
The first and most important reason why Hercules is my epic hero is because he managed to do everything in a heroic manner and the difficult tasks he overcame. When he was born, and before that, he already had gained an enemy, Hera. Hera was
After reading and analyzing both Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, I received multiple perspectives of a “hero” and what that word meant during these time periods. Therefore, in both stories, it was evident that in order to be considered a hero during this time one had to be selfless and loyal to the king/crown by sacrificing oneself to maintain the tranquility within their kingdom. Nonetheless, in terms of Beowulf, I considered both the protagonist, Beowulf, and one of his warriors, Wiglaf, to be heroic individuals who portrayed all the necessary characteristics one must acquire to be considered a hero during this century. This was because Beowulf numerously sacrificed himself to protect King Hrothgar’s kingdom, when he battled
First, we must recognize the qualities of a hero. Specifically, a Germanic hero. A hero will always follow a heroic code. Following the heroic code would mean being loyal, generous, and valuing vengeance. We see these characteristics in Beowulf and his actions throughout the poem.
The two epic poems show many similarities in the presentation of their values. Throughout the poems there are some significant values being described such as the relationships between the characters, the courage of the men, and the respect they have and carry. These values work together to put importance on being someone that keeps and remains true to their word. The epic poem, Beowulf, describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times (GÓMEZ-CALDERÓN). The hero, Beowulf, was an amazing warrior with all the unusual values required by a hero.
They are many ways to define an a epic hero. An epic hero has characteristic like significant and glorified, is ethical and morally upright, has superior strength, intelligence, and or courage, is a strong and responsible leader and much more. These characteristics define two men who are Hector and Achilles. The two men are example of an epic hero. The better epic hero is hector because he had significant and glorified by the people.
History has a tendency to repeat itself through actions and moments. This is evident when comparing two epic heroes: Iron Man and Beowulf. Like Beowulf, Iron Man demonstrates many of the qualities of an Anglo Saxon epic hero such as courage, strength, and arrogance. Even when read the definition of a hero: a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. The first quality they share is courage.
By definition, a hero a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities (Merriam Webster). Different qualities like courage, honor and selflessness is what makes a hero and creates their reputation. However, a hero cannot be admired by the people it protects without exhibiting these three qualities. These three men show what a hero should really be. Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney and Sir Gawain from “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” translated by Brian Stone and Burton Raffel demonstrate heroic qualities like courage, honor, and selflessness, but Christy Mahon form Playboy of the Western World; and the Riders to the Sea written by J.M.
The qualities that make an epic hero are strength, courage a strong mentality, and the aspiration to achieve heroic acts. Many heroes are considered role models as they make brave decisions attempting to do something extraordinary. Heroes often fight against the causes of evil as they try to make the environment a better place. Hercules (son of Zeus) is one of the many known Gods to Greek mythology. He is supernatural and immortal.
In the epic Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is depicted as a heroic figure who fights monsters and defends the weak. During its time, Beowulf would be considered a great hero, however in today 's standards Beowulf would only be considered a great warrior. That’s because a hero should value the lives of the people and not seek to be rewarded. Instead, Beowulf committed heroic acts for his own selfish reasons and never shows to values the lives of the people. From fighting Grendel to slaying the dragon, Beowulf only fought because he value the fame and fortune that comes along with those accomplishments.
