Literary Focus: Characterization
Characterization is the art of creating and developing a character. There are two types of characterization: direct and indirect. In direct characterization, writers make direct statements about a character’s appearance and personality. In indirect characterization, character’s traits are revealed through their own words and actions, as well as through the comments and actions of other characters.

In paragraph three, the author includes figurative language. How does the figurative language in the text help the reader understand the character’s feelings about getting older? Use textual evidence to support your answer.
The figurative language in the text helps the reader understand the character’s feeling about getting older by creating a simile between human maturation and “the rings inside a tree trunk” for example (Cisneros). The number of rings in a tree trunk can tell the age of the tree. Every year, a new ring develops around the previous. This supports her statement that “when you're eleven, you're also ten, and nine, and eight, seven, and six, and five, and four, three, and two, and one. A simile is a comparison between two things containing the words like or as. Rachel also uses a metaphor to compare maturation to her dolls. She argues that her “little wooden dolls that fit one inside the other, each year inside the next one” is what it's like “being eleven years old” (Cisneros). A metaphor is a comparison between two things without the words like or as. Her use of figurative language connects her previous observation about growing

All day today I couldn’t sit still. I was almost bouncing off the walls just like how I behaved when I was five and had some sweets. Today was my birthday and I would be spending it with my mother, sister, auntie, and two best friends. I couldn’t wait to go to the nail shop and then out to eat. That was all I could think about all day. My best friends were in my class and they were just as excited. My mother brought cupcakes to school for my class to enjoy which made everything even better.
“I can’t wait for 5:00,” Rielle squealed with
Rachel Heinen Dr. Bolis ENGL 1301W 3 March 2023 Analytical Response #4 - Kindred In the novel Kindred, by Octavia Butler, there are many instances of direct and indirect characterization. Direct characterization involves the technique of directly telling the readers something about a character while indirect characterization involves showing the reader through actions and dialogue. An excellent example of direct characterization is how Butler directly tells the readers right away in the novel that Dana is African American.
Direct characterization is when the author candidly describes how one of his characters looks or the mannerisms of that character. Connell uses direct characterization when describing General Zaroff to his readers. When Connell introduces General Zaroff into the story, Connell describes him as being a handsome man with some strange quality about
An example of the author using indirect characterization is when Hassan is being attacked following the kite-fighting tournament, Amir doesn't take any action to help him because all he is thinking about is the kite, calling it, "my key
In the following paragraphs I will use the main points to present Hurst using indirect characterization in the story “The Scarlet Ibis” throughout 4 quotes and explanations. The thesis states, Hurst uses indirect characterization to teach readers that selfishness can have positive and negative outcomes. Positive outcomes can come from selfishness Brother teaches doodle to walk because he is embarrassed that doodle’s crippled.
Characterization is a literary element used to describe a character's actions, speech, thoughts and interactions with other characters. Characters in literature sometimes make dramatic transformations. In A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, the character Scrooge entirely changes his his whole character from some grouchy, old man into someone who is jovial and full of glee. In Stave 1, Dickens establishes Scrooge’s character as someone who is sulky and irritable.
In the story"Eleven", Rachel acts more like a child than a tween. One reason Rachel acts more like a child is in paragraph five,"If I was one hundred and two I'd have known what to say when Mrs. Price put the red sweater on my desk instead of just sitting with that look on my face and nothing coming out of my mouth". This shows that Rachel acts like a child because she "sat there with that look on my face" or showing emotions without speaking. Another reason might be in paragraph ten said,"I finally say in a little voice that was maybe me when I was four".
All readers have come across the stereotypical character who is charming, good-looking, and the savior of the story and our hearts, but that is present in commercial fiction. In literary fiction, characters are something greater and deeper. In literary fiction, characterization is considered one of the most important elements in an author’s work. Characterization is the concept of creating a character.
“The Metaphor,” by Budge Wilson, is a short story about a young girl, Charlotte, coming of age. It begins with Charlotte as a seventh grader stuck between the two poles of her life: her teacher and mother. During the course of this bildungsroman, there are many techniques the author uses to strengthen and amplify its theme of growing up. Through the use of motif, juxtaposition, and symbolism, the reader is aware of the protagonist’s growth. In the story, the most potent motif is the metaphor.
Griffin Youngs Period 1 English 10 GT In the short story, “Eleven”, Sandra Cisneros depicts Rachel as an empathetic, wise, but socially misunderstood child who feels excluded by both her teachers and her fellow students. Cisneros utilizes various literary techniques throughout “Eleven” to help bring out the characteristics of the young and bashful Rachel, whose shyness keeps her from being able to express her inner brilliance. A prominent literary technique shown by Cisneros throughout the story is imagery.
The characterization of the characters come from how the author establishes how each character presents its knowledge about
Rachel says, “how long till lunchtime...how long till I can take the red sweater... bunch it”(38-39), this proves that Rachel does not feel comfortable in a simple situation. She also has an interesting view on birthdays. Rachel feels almost confused at the thought of celebrating being a year older. She says that “...you might say something stupid,...
In the story Eleven Rachel, the narrator acts more like a child. The author states, “I put one arm through one sleeve of the sweater… I sit there with my arms apart like if the sweater hurts me, and it does.” Knowing children, they would probably look for the worst in situations they don’t like. They would then try to over exaggerate to get their point across, like “the sweater hurts me.”
An example of indirect characterization would include “...Know yourself. Love yourself. Be a good friend. Be a kind of hope and substance…” This doesn’t exactly tell you about Mim, but it explains what she aspires to be. She wants to be a wise young lady, which the author doesn’t come right out and say it, but he implies that those are her goals.
Direct characterization tells the audience what the personality of a character is. It actually tells you why that person is how it is in the story why he is mean or why he is a lonely, caring, loving person. Indirect Characterization means that the author shows thing that reveal the personality of a character and there are five different methods of Indirect characterization. (read*write*think 1) Characterization helps the author to make his characters.
The teacher, Ms. Price picks up a sweater and asks the class if anyone is missing a sweater. A student says that it's Rachel's, and the teacher gives her the sweater without even thinking. Rachel thinks and speaks in a way that is very reminiscent of an eleven year old. There is a youthful, innocent tone in her voice, especially when she says “I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven” without actually thinking about the disadvantages of being that age. Throughout the day, she references home and how she longs to go home to celebrate with her family and eat cake.
