In the playwright, “The Crucible,” the audience follows the actions of a town named Salem; 1692 - 1693, Massachusetts Bay Colony. A man named John Proctor is the main protagonist of the story as his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. The main conflict of the story is when Abigail Williams accuses Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft. Abigail Williams and John Proctor had an affair with each other during a time of when Abigail worked for John. Elizabeth Proctor unfortunately discovered this and fired Abigail for their adultery. At the beginning of the play, a man sees Abigail and the girls of the town dancing in the wilderness. While all the girls are dancing, Abigail seems to whisper something to the leader of the dancing, Tituba. Tituba looked absolutely appalled by what Abigail has whispered into her ear. Soon after introducing Elizabeth, Abigail accuses Elizabeth for committing “witchcraft” and is therefore arrested by the sheriff and marshal. John does everything in his power to fight against the two long arms of the law, but it powerless to stop Elizabeth from going to the prison to be tried as a witch unless she confesses to witchcraft. At this point, Elizabeth and Abigail confirm that they are the hero vs. villain theme of literature. While Elizabeth and Abigail are nigh complete opposites, they have more in common than their goal for John Proctor’s love. However, they are both pursuing the same goal in different ways. Elizabeth already has John’s full devotion and support, however, she is afraid of losing him to Abigail or Abigail succeeding in ruining what she has with John. Abigail’s goal is to get rid of Elizabeth so John can open his eyes to her and fall in love with Abigail. They both have plenty of personality traits, henceforth, they also have their similarities and
