In today’s society, leaving an influential legacy on the internet determines how famous a person is or was. When one searches Elizabeth Taylor on Google, about 221-228 million results emerge, exceeding Bill Gate’s and Marilyn Monroe’s results combined. During her younger years, other girls were playing with dolls while she was becoming increasingly aware of the effect her appearance had on people. Because of the lack of a father figure in her life, Taylor married “manly” men who could take care of her childlike antics. Elizabeth Taylor was less popular after her two rehab admittances, especially when she arbitrarily married a construction worker she had met there. People looked to Taylor for makeup and fashion inspiration. Magazines published tips on how to reinvent Taylor’s famous cat-eye from Cleopatra. She sold her perfumes at an alarming rate; the public fanatically ate up everything she offered. Taylor was a beauty icon, an ethereal reverie come alive. Whilst most actresses had to slather on coat after coat of mascara, Elizabeth Taylor had a genetic mutation called “distichiasis,” which gave her an extra set of eyelashes on each eye (“The End of an Era”). Her dark lashes further intensified her blue-violet eyes. James Agee, an expert movie critic, once stated after watching National Velvet, “I think that she and the picture are wonderful, and I hardly know or care whether she can act or not” (qtd. in Gussow).
