Ella Fitzgerald's Influence On The Great Gatsby

This paper explores how Ella Fitzgerald’s hopeful attitude has had an effect on the of her scat singing style development that made her a successful artist. Ella Fitzgerald is a jazz singer most known for her style of scat singing (Bauer). She did not have a background in singing or music as a child, but has great techniques including vocal textures, perfect pitch, three octave range, and near beautiful intonation (Ulanov 277). It is a wonder to all how she developed her style and one explanation is her positive attitude. With a positive attitude, the singer could solely focus on singing and being creative.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, his characters, parallel his life at many points following the old advice of “write what you know,” to a T. Yet, most of the characters are not a constant, as they represent some aspects and perspectives on him, to bring a more realistic feel to the novel and create something that he felt was his own, hence “all my characters are Scott Fitzgerald.” The Great Gatsby’s plot centers largely around Jay Gatsby’s life and romantic pursuits of Daisy Buchanan. Princeton University’s Merdell Nodan’s 1978 analysis wrote that Daisy’s character is in reference to Fitzgerald’s first love, Ginevra King, a Chicagoan socialite, who he, in a slight obsession or hard infatuation, wrote letters two and remained steadfast in his feelings despite her father’s society brought disapproval.

Moreover, Fitzgerald continues the farming analogy by bringing in vivid descriptions of the valley “where the ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens.” The ideas defined are burn in to the reader’s conscious with the explicit disgust evoking analogy. The ashes are found just like the large fields of wheat that were formally found all around. The site is surely a recognizable one for most, but instead the astonishing view of the wheat waving around is replaced with the windy dusty fields. For multiple reasons The Great Gatsby impacted my life. With personal issues and a previous appreciation for the theatrical version of the story, I was able to connect with the novel on a much deeper level than most. Through Gatsby’s persistence and passion, I was taught how important it is to care enough and pursue everything, even your craziest dream. Also, Jay’s tragedy revealed to me when a person should realize that maybe it is better to draw a line and move on in life even if it hurts. Overall, I am very thankful for the opportunity to read the book and learn the lessons I did.

Being an American can mean a wide variety of things to different people. Some people think being an American is someone who is free, others think being an American can be a positive or a negative, but every individual has personal beliefs about what it means to be an American. Nick, the narrator of the book The Great Gatsby, describes Gatsby 's resourcefulness of movement as, “...so peculiarly American that comes, I suppose, with the absence of lifting work or rigid sitting in your and, even more with the formless grace of our nervous, sporadic games” (64). Nick describes Gatsby as someone who does not work hard and further compares those aspects as American, therefore Nick’s perception of Americans is that they are not hard workers. While Nick seems to have a preconceived notion of what it means to be an American, the entire novel Portrays F. Scott Fitzgerald views on what it means to be an American in the changing time periods.

Eleanor was reading in the living room, curled up with her favorite book in the armchair by the window. The grandfather clock ticked loudly, but it was easy to ignore. Journal #1: The short story Daisy Miller by Henry James intrigues me in various ways, such as the implication of a black and white world when Randolf is comparing American and European societies. This theme is further represented during Winterbourne’s observant and analytical episodes. He compares and contrasts the characteristics that European and American females portray in society’s norms. Through these recurrences of black and white ideological comparisons, I was reminded of a similar resemblance within The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and his illustration of “new money” versus “old money,” which also occurs within Daisy Miller.

The Great Gatsby is about a man who just wanted to live his dream. The main character, Jay Gatsby is always focusing on the past and future. One of the major themes is focusing on the past and future. Gatsby thinks of what could have been if he would have made better choices, but he also thinks about what he can do to make the future better. Gatsby is not the only one who focuses on the theme, Nick and Daisy also focus on this theme too.

Women in society have undergone major changes throughout the years, with more liberty to act as they choose and become more individual. The transition phases of women’s roles are prevalent in the 1920s, the setting for the novel. The Great Gatsby by Scott F .Fitzgerald published in 1925 demonstrates many elements of the Roaring 20s era, most notably the role of women in society. The Jazz Age as it was called, was categorized by lavish parties and reckless behavior. Women became more scandalous and risqué during these crazy alcohol-fueled events.

The idea for Daisy's character, Gatsby's rise into wealth and vasts amount of drinking throughout the novel were influenced by Fitzgerald's life. Fitzgerald was stationed at camp taylor during world war 1 where he met the love of his life and future wife zelda Sayre.
