The City of Ember relates to our present day world in many different ways. To begin, one of the similarities between Ember and our world today is that we both rely on electricity on an everyday basis. Whether it is renewable or nonrenewable energy, electricity is essential to our lives. Ember decided to live in a city underground powered by a hydroelectric generator to avoid an upcoming natural disaster. Their main source of energy was electricity. But in the end, the city realized that they could not live and strive with only one source of energy. If our world went into a crisis like Ember’s, we would not know what to do. Our ignorance would really show through and we would not fully understand the situation. The world would be in panic …show more content…
For example, if our only source of energy was the sun, we would not exist because of the chemical energy we need in our bodies. The sun provides us with thermal, radiant, and electrical energy which are essential for us. But, it does not provide us with the chemical, potential, gravitational, and kinetic energy that is also essential for us humans. Another similarity between our world today and Ember is how we are both running out of resources that are available to us. Ember’s hydroelectric generator is slowly starting to decay and age to the point where it is starting to turn on and off consistently and for long periods of time. Without this generator, Ember’s city would live in complete darkness and without any source of electricity. However, our world is running out of fresh water rather than electricity and food. To prevent the world from going scarce with the resources available to us, we need to make sure we use them properly and to its full capability instead of wasting it. We also relate to Ember because we are both trying to change the way we use our resources. The Earth is being intoxicated by fossil fuels and many scientists are insisting for
These were the weekly wash and ironing days, and probably baking days, too, for the housewives in town.” For those living in this rural area outside of the county's larger cities, this addition of electrical power would have been an enormously positive change, even if they themselves were not involved in the other agricultural and milling process of the Thorp Mill. Like other areas in Eastern Washington, in Thorp “water power was cheap and inexpensive power, and a gristmill was not beyond the financial means of most early towns, with everyone banding together to help in getting the mill
The city is short on food so the people of Ember are skinny, but not for the major. Its suspicious, because the major is more heavier set that everyone else. Doon and Lina find out that he is hording food for himself and causing the people to starve. He is the first major to not discover the secrets of Ember. He abuses his power as mayor and is very mean.
Which was a real stupid idea and their building burned twice so that had to have made them change their mind. (Zachary
Sooner or later, the city was burnt to the ground. A couple days later, the fire stopped. There was a lot of people effected and a lot of damage done. The city builders learned their lesson. There was no warning from humans that there was going to be a fire, but one from nature.
There was a downward spiral of looting and lawlessness. The city officials actually had to call in soldiers to come and protect the structures and belongings of the businesses and residents. Martial law was eventually declared, ending the 3 days of chaos. It took several weeks for them to feel safe enough to lift the martial law. Once the smoke cleared and the soot settled the city jumped on the opportunity to rebuild.
If there is a global crisis, someone must step in and do something. Some people agree with this, but others do not because if someone were to step in too soon, it could possibly make things worse. According to the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, “...there was a rumor going around that the front had suddenly drawn nearer… My neighbor, the faceless one, said: “Don't let yourself be fooled with illusions. Hitler has made it very clear that he will annihilate
The United States in the early 1930s saw nearly ninety percent of its urban population with access to electricity, which allowed them more efficient uses of machines like electric stoves, coffee makers, waffle irons, hot plates, electric roasters, and Waring Blenders. At that time, it was financially difficult for private companies to supply urban areas with electricity for numerous reasons, primarily because farmers were often too poor, too widespread, and too few to actually produce a real profit from. Still, rural life without electricity was hard. Farmers had to rely on dim kerosene lanterns just to do their work, the absence of electricity in opposition to cities aided in their isolation, and the general standard of living was dangerously
Granny really needs to put her act together, her shop used to be tidy, but now its really messy and she can also be forgetful sometimes. Summary of book This book is about the city of ember which was created under ground when the world was falling apart. There is not an unlimited supply of powering the generator which is slowly degrading, so the residents are
When people are not aware of where their energy comes from, it threatens their values and ideals. Aldo Leopold discusses these dangers in his essay, Good Oak, suggesting solutions to prevent them and improve the environment in the process. Energy powers many of the things key to life. As pollution and environmental destruction become a more imminent threat, humans must control their use of energy, preferably making sure not to use more than is necessary to sustain them. People who do not fully control the sources of their energy may take it for granted and waste it, however if they make changes in their lifestyle, these dangers can be avoided.
Eliezer Wiesel and Jeanne Wakatsuki have very many things in common through rough experiences in the camps they were in. Eliezer and Jeanne have a lot in common like how they both changed personality’s throughout the story, how they showed fear in many situations, and lastly they both learned from these hard experiences. Even though Eliezer and Jeanne can relate in many ways they are actually quite different and experienced different things. For instance, Eliezer was not obstinate like Jeanne. Also, there was a point in the novel where he was completely alone while Jeanne had her family with her throughout the whole time in the camp.
“The City of Ember” has many similarities and differences between film however, the movie was a more entertaining experience. The two brave and strong main characters, Lina and Doon, are assigned each other’s wished jobs on assignment day. After the assembly, Lina and Doon secretly switch their jobs as the next day they go off to each other’s new jobs, Lina as a messenger and Doon as a pipeworks worker. Together, they explore Ember and eventually find a way out in the pipeworks where Doon works. They take Poppy, Lina’s younger sister, and get into a boat made from one of the lockers.
Ember is in big trouble with living in a dystopian society, they will start falling apart, and everything will just start going down hill. The job structure of Ember has some questionable tactics on how it works; the lack knowledge is a upsetting because they barely know anything. The limited resources in Ember keep tearing them down, so the city can not be successful. As you can see, The City of Ember has a very dystopian life, that makes it difficult to
There is the idea of a city, and the city itself, too great to be held in the mind. And it is in this gap (between the conceptual and the real) that aggression begins” is central to Saunders’ essay, due to the fact that this quote illustrates Saunders’ message that people tend to have misconceptions generated from their own limited experience and misconceptions can easily lead to conflicts and aggression if handled
Where there is Energy: there is life Having Energy means having life yet we are running out of fuel. How are we going to survive if our energy sources are depleting. We must make a change. Confucius and Henry David Thoreau would argue upon whose responsibility the stewardship of natural resources would depend on, but both would agree that either the individuals, or a society should take action.
It is commonly known throughout human history that the energy used is burned from coal which creates biomass. During the Industrial Revolution, coal was an essential need to everyone, hence the discovery of oil as a substitute. Yet, the mass formation from the unearthing of oil causes more damage than benefits for the planet. Humanity had never seen a more compatible source in which came a higher demand for oil. As the public has urged to generate more oil, scientists theorized that fossil fuels will eventually run out, making way for a renewable energy route in the future (Mason).
