Drawing on Durkheim’s idea of ‘external constraints’, explain what accounts for the religious experiences of Nat and Brigette?
The level of influence that religion has on an individual’s life has always been a question. People always wonder how much of their actions are the result of their independent thoughts and how much is the result of conditioning from our social interactions. This essay discusses the level of impact that religion has on a person’s life and whether this effect diminishes with the person’s deviation from their religious norm. Most of Emile Durkheim’s work focus on social work. This theory contributed to most, if not all of his published works. Religion is also considered to be a social issues. Religion discusses the sacred and the profane, both of which are determined externally from the individual, and it also allows them to do certain things while at the same time restraining them from undertaking certain tasks. Durkheim, in his writings, suggested that a social fact is a way of acting that comes externally from the person (Longhofer and Winchester). Social circumstances allow the community to understand how the social world operates, therefore making part of sociology and the everyday operations of the present society. They look at societal problems and the existing relationship between individuals and the societal aspects that hold their power.
