To begin, the lack of financial stability in the Walls family has always been problematic, however as the mother of her children, Rose Mary never contributed much to the family income due to her stubbornness and free-spirited nature. A prime example of Rose Mary not providing for her family is a constant lack of food in the house. The children’s hunger is apparent when Jeannette says, “We did eat less. Once we lost our credit at the commissary, we quickly ran out of food. Sometimes Dad’s odd jobs would come through, or he’d win some money gambling, and we’d eat for a few days.

Comparative Analysis: Their Eyes Were Watching God The beginning of the twentieth century in the United States was a difficult time full of oppression for most women, They're Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston along with Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour, and Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper all highlight female individualism and liberation from male oppression.

1. Feminist Lens • Oppression – Indian women in this film did not receive the same treatment as men, especially when they become widows. Females as young as eight years are forced to find a husband as their families cannot not support all of their children due to their poor socio-economic conditions. However, when Indian females lose their husbands, they are often looked down upon as it was viewed as a sin for a woman to remain a widow. Widows are required to spend all their lives in an ashram, where living conditions are well below average due to a limited supply of food and other necessities.

She didn’t like it because there was a rule for manly everything so it took her many months to learn everything. She was married at fourteen to a man named Louis Auguste. She was miserable because she had no family there and she hated her husband at first.

Most young women middle to low class were not able to attend school because it was thought of as the woman belongs at home to attend to the children and to be ready for when her husband when he arrives home. Life expectancy was short in the nineteenth century. Woman suffered from what was called “green sickness” because women suffered from severe anemic most of the foods that were high in protein they were not permitted to eat. Many women were not allowed to eat red meat because it was considered a “masculine” food.

Even though my mom was as awful as she was before she let me go, everyone always reminded me of how stoked my mom was while she was pregnant, but years after I was born I watched her slowly wither away. The author in this reading is pointing out many instances of American people being hypocritical when writing or speaking about Muslim people. The author talked about the poor living standards in Afghanistan with most of the homes not having access to clean water and how 36% of people are living below the poverty line (pg. 18). The author then goes on to explain that 1 out of 7 Afghan women are widows and are left with no help from the government and are forced to make a living through begging, prostitution, or suicide (pg. 19).

When my parents started dating, I was furious just thinking about them with someone else besides each other. When my dad got remarried to this woman, Ellen Cook, I didn’t think I could hate someone more than I hated her. She was the worst woman I ever met and so was her family. Every weekend I would go to their house it was like torture. I was either being called fat or hearing my sister being called fat.

The biggest struggle that women in that time period faced was their lack of equality compared to men. Compared to men they were deemed inferior. For example, in 'The Yellow Wallpaper, ' when the women insisted that her staying confined in that place was not working, her husband dismissed her and called her a "blessed little goose. " Her husband did not see her as fit for her to decide what was or was not working for herself. This is one of the many instances where men in that time period deemed themselves superior and took away the freedom of their wives.

Stroker brought up points such as “The biggest problem is Vandiver’s first words: “His strategy was the offensive-defensive.” At no point does Vandiver present any evidence that Davis ever decided to prosecute such a strategy.” (Stroker, pg. 8) Stroker had jumped from explaining how the offensive-defensive could have possibly been a strategy in the Confederacy, to proving how it was not an option, and how there was no evidence to show that it was an option.
