Empathy In The Film A Class Divided

The word sympathy is defined in the Oxford dictionary as “feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune.” Many people feel sympathy for their friends and family when they are going through hard times. Sympathy can also be felt for people you don't know personally, such as characters in a book or movie. While sympathy comes easily to most, some people may find it difficult to harbor these emotions for other people. A reason for this may be that they weren’t, or aren’t, shown much sympathy at home, and it has hardened their hearts.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. To me the word empathy in “To Kill A Mockingbird” means “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” suggests that empathy is a universal feeling, but everyone experiences it in different occasions and in different ways. Many people empathize through real life experiences. Scout is one of those people.

Therefore, it is one thing to try and see a situation from the other person's perspective, but the challenge comes when putting themselves in the shoes of another individual. In fact, empathy is only truly practiced when an individual takes time to reflect on how they would feel in a similar situation and goes further to acknowledge and validate the feelings of the individual. For instance, the young boy Tereek, after reflecting on many of his feelings continues his night walking down the street with the idea of empathy in mind. During this, Tereek comes across a homeless man who previously asked Tereek for money. Tereek, “looks down with concern…and drops the same 10 dollar bill he had taken from Artie in the homeless man’s change cup” (Ronald 00:16:47).

Empathy Equals Laziness What is the definition of empathy? According to Oxford Languages the definition of empathy is “The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” but in our honest opinion is there really such a thing as empathy in our justice system? Or is it just an objective spruced up by the people in lower society?

A tough exterior can mask a gentle soul. In the bildungsroman, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, there are several examples of this. Such examples are his empathy towards other people, his thoughts on fighting, and his values he holds. In the novel, the reader views life through the protagonist, a troubled kid who seems cold and hard but under his facade lies a sensitive boy who longs for companionship.

This form of text relies heavily on imagery and comparison to inflict the reader with the associated feelings. As such, is displayed within Stephen Dunn 's, aptly named poem, Empathy. Quite ironically, Dunn implores strong diction to string along his cohesive plot of a man seeing the world in an emphatic light. The text starts off by establishing the military background of the main protagonist, as he awaits a call from his lover in a hotel room.

At the start of the movie “Stand by Me”, four boys go on a journey to find a deceased classmate. Throughout the movie, they experience many different emotions. In the beginning, they are quite anxious to find the dead body, but when they discover their classmate their feelings change. Although they don’t quite know it, they start to understand the meaning of empathy. Once the boys find Brower’s body, they show empathy by how they deal with the situation.

It is very important that writers are able to send a message to their reader with their book. Authors best do this by bringing about empathy. In order to send this message, authors often develop strong characters that go through various problems and struggles. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird, shows this very well with its characters Scout Finch and Tom Robinson. This book helps the readers learn from the character’s reactions to their problems.

Expressing empathy to a client who is stuck is critical in keeping the process moving forward. To properly express empathy the coach needs to make sure they aren’t being sympathetic. The main different between empathy and sympathy is empathy doesn’t involve the coach “feeling sorry” for the client.

During this semester, I gained a lot of skills and knowledge about interpersonal relations. As a human being, as a member of the "global village", everyone need to communicate with others. It is important to learn how to communicate well and how to build a healthy and positive interpersonal relationship with others. Like the textbook’ name “Looking Out Looking In”, we looked in the communication itself, looked out the language barrier, nonverbal messages and effective listening, and looked at relational dynamics. I learned and recognized about how environmental factors can impact our communication.

Empathy is the ability to recognize, understand and directly experience the emotion of another. It means understanding that the behavior may be connected to something outside of the immediate situation. Empathy is being with a person using most of our senses. Seeing what their body language is when they are speaking; is it angry or are they quiet and possibly not wanting to talk at all. Does the body language match their tone of voice when you are listening to their story?

Empathy is one of the things that bonds us as human beings; being able to feel for somebody else’s problems when they clearly do not affect us at all is why valuing literature is so important.
