Enduring Issues are problems and challenges that mankind has faced and learned from through all of time. An example of an enduring issue is the need for innovation. The need for innovation is an issue that causes mankind to create new things or find new ways to do something to address the issue. This is extremely important because this is what pushes mankind to create new technology and ideas. These new technologies and ideas are what cause humanity to progress. The need for innovation is vital to the progression of the human race and has led to the creation of many things such as the basis for farming, terrace farming, and farming using the seed drill, which all changed the world as they knew it in their respective time periods. Terrace farming was a skill learned by farmers in civilizations that settled in or around hills and mountains. Due to the unlevel terrain, it was hard for these civilizations to farm. There was a need for innovation. Civilizations such as the Chinese, developed the terrace farming method. According to document 2, this method consisted of cutting into the side of a hill to create flat ledges going up the hill that look like steps. The problem was that there was not the right terrain for farming. WIthout farming it is very hard to have a steady food supply for the growing nation. This caused a need for innovation and caused the invention of terrace farming. Without people settling around mountains and hills in early civilzations, the practice of terrace farming may have never been created, and civilizations may have never been able to settle on or around these kinds of terrains. This would have vastly changed the world with less land to settle and create society, and it may have caused even more conflict in the world because without the option of settling on or around hills and mountains being available, the same civilizations that would have settled there would be packed closer together in a smaller space. Civilizations such as the Chinese and many others in Asia, South America, and other continents may have never grown and flourished the same way they did with the innovation of terrace farming. Therefore, the …show more content…
As populations grew and there were more mouths to feed, farming needed to become more efficient. With inaccurately placed seeds and seeds being out in the open available to birds to eat before they get the chance to grow, there was a need for innovation. This is when the seed drill was invented. It states in document 4 that the seed drill drilled holes for 3 rows of seeds, planted the seed, and covered it back up, all at the same time. This not only made farming more effective, producing about 5 times the amount of food, but also made it more efficient. With the seed drill, crops were faster to plant and fewer workers were required. This was a huge innovation for farming as a whole and made the whole idea and process of farming even more necessary. The increase of food also in turn allowed for a larger population due to it creating a surplus. Additionally, due to the need for fewer workers, the people who previously worked in the fields could then take on jobs such as working in factories, which therefore made the production of those products better. The seed drill was invented around the time of the industrial revolution, meaning there was a need for more factory workers, so these people going from the farms to the factories really helped kick off the industrial revolution. Once again, this all started because civilizations needed food faster and more of it, there was a need for innovation. This is what caused the
These same farmers then didn’t alternate the crops they planted. This led to infertile soil lacking the necessary vitamins and minerals to grow crops which resulted in the creation
(worksheet) And had to resort to terrace farming in order to survive and farm on these mountains. They had a strong central government along with this and when there was a good harvest the government
The Aztecs created a system that made farming more efficient. In the Chinampas document it says, “Chinampa is a method of farming that uses small, rectangular areas to grow crops on the shallow lake beds in the Mexican valley. Chinampas were essentially artificial islands created for the crops.” Using chinampas, the Aztecs were able to grow more crops because they had more land. Chinampas made the soil richer since there was easy access to water and also made it easier for the farmers because they could use channels to get to the islands.
Nevertheless, since they lived in the Valley of Mexico, they were surrounded by mountains and needed to adapt to be able to farm more land. Therefore, they incorporated the use of terraces into their farming. Hence, the Aztecs were outstanding farmers who were able to adapt to their mountainous
Farming was useful for crops like wheat but corn, pumpkin and beans were planted because they were able to grow in the poor soil they had.
In the 18th to 19th century in Europe, the agricultural revolution made farming more efficient which allowed more people to get fed with less labor, which led to a massive population growth. With a much bigger and healthier population and new technologies and resources to take part, new factories emerged ran by capitalists and entrepreneurs. This in turn called for new ways of organizing human labor to maximize the benefits and profits from the new machines. Thus, the Industrial Revolution began and this idea slowly spread throughout Europe and eventually to the United States.
This is all because they were cultural and knew how to plant and grow crops very
Along with this, they brought traditional farming techniques. The technique called dry farming, designed for a very different, much more wet, climate, ruined the topsoil of the land. This caused crops to easily be uprooted in the winds of the plains. The use of dry farming (using only natural precipitation) caused the land to dry further from the lack of water due to crop growth. The topsoil, now loose, was easily picked up by wind, creating large waves of dust rushing towards homes and farms.
Though they had many difficulties farming in the Inca Empire, like how they had “arable land with little water and a lot of water where there was little arable land. ” To combat this, they used terrace farming. The ground is made into steps to allow water to flow from the top areas to the bottom and irrigate the soil. The large area of millions of hectares made the terrace farming able to support at least six million people. This is a photo of terrace farming, which is how the Incas farmed.
Global History & Geography Final Exam Part II: Enduring Issues Essay Throughout history, many communities and societies made their own technological advances. Some medical advances, others transportation advances, etc. All still play an important part in the development of human civilizations over time. However, an Enduring Issue that has appeared throughout time is cultural diffusion and technology.
Farmers were unaware of their practices, and never used crop rotation. Crop rotation is a method of planting where you give the soil a break, and use different land. “Such farmers were practicing dry farming, in which crops are grown in arid or semiarid conditions with little irrigation” (Delher). At times, this was very hard for farmers because they did not have the amount of money or land to ever give their soil a break. “The plains were productive when there was plenty of rainfall.
One method of farming used by the Aztecs to grow crops in the areas near natural resources such as water. This strategy increased the amount the crops would produce as they realized this would create more suitable land. Chinampa is the name of this method of farming that uses small, rectangular areas to grow crops on the shallow lake beds, utilizing the water. Another agricultural tool the Aztecs used was rotating where they planted their crops. This method enabled them to grow more successful crops with greater production of food and material.
Shifting cultivation was a common way of agriculture. Settlers burned forests to grow plants and food in this area. They would move another area when soil didn't have nutrition. As a result of this, erosion caused everywhere and made empty fields. Also, wild animals lost their habitat because forests were disappearing and people created earthworks.
The invention allowed farmers to produce more food in a shorter amount time and it gave England a lot more food to eat. The changes in agriculture made it easier for England to Industrialize because it gave them more resources. Also, the farmers in England expanded on the Dutch agricultural experiments. Farmers mixed different soils to get a higher crop yield and others grew turnips to help restore exhausted soil. These new methods gave England a surplus of food and help trigger the Industrial Revolution.
Throughout U.S history, new innovations are being developed constantly. In other words, society has fallen in reliance to the new technological innovations, as a result making the U.S constantly evolve. With evolution, new technological innovations are becoming more and more complex rewriting our history. Although technological innovations have positive effects on society and mankind, it also has its fair share of flaws. Such innovations include but are not limited to is cotton gins and the invention of automobiles.
