Language is one special constituent of culture as it carries the contents and features of a particular national and local custom. Idiom, the so-called "custom fossil", is formed during a long-term phase of language development. There arises an intense necessity for academic researches on Chinese and English idioms with the more frequent communication among people of the two nations. The paper analyzes the differences between Chinese and English idioms and casts some light on the factors that cause the differences between these two kinds of idioms in the perspective of different customs. The aim of the paper is to raise language learners’ awareness of an appropriate understanding of English idioms during language learning and to provide English teachers with some pragmatic approaches to foster their students’ sociocultural competence.
