English Is A Foreign Language

English is a foreign language in Iran. The majority of learners have learned English since middle school (sixth grade). They have studied English for at least 6 years. However, some of students despite studying English for many years, still struggle when trying to use or understands the language English (Akbari, 2015). Some Teachers attempt to learn vocabulary into memorize; also try to learn new words by using a long list of words with their equivalent without contextualization (Tabatabaei & Loni, 2015). Some learners and teachers use a list of words and a set of grammatical rules which are to be memorized and separately skills to be acquired, instead of a set of integrated skills and sub skill for learning English (McPherson, 2001).
The first stage in vocabulary learning is to memorize the target words. But the problem is that these words might not be correctly recalled over a long period of time. This problem obviously has to do with our memory (Gu, 2003). Memory, though a commonly used word in daily life, is more frequently explored in the psychological world. Parle et al. (2006) defined memory as the process of encoding, storing, and retrieving information.
Many teachers have attempted to find ways to motivate students to learn more vocabulary with long time, and the mnemonic might be the answer.
