Abstract
The paper intends to study the need to evolve a contextual and integrated teaching learning and evaluation process that takes into account every student and their English Language skill competency. Being part of an Institution that enjoys position as an Autonomous College provides avenues to evolve a curriculum and testing method to promote a contextual and inclusive education process.
The faculty in English at the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, had the opportunity to study and test the English Language Skill component of the students enrolled for the undergraduate

We were empowered with the freedom to evolve our own curricula and assessment pattern and we wanted to do justice to it. We set out on a threefold action plan in our designing of curricula for teaching English as a second language. The first step was to conduct a minor survey of students in the pre-university level as they would be the ones who would join a undergraduate programme next. We intended to assess their skill level with regard to English Language and the significance it held for them. The study would dwell on the way they perceived themselves, their future life, career options, and what place English Language skill had for them now and in the …show more content…
This was for the students enrolling to the undergraduate programme after the completion of their pre-university studies. We evolved a text independently, to suit the needs of the students. The text and the exercises were so designed as to facilitate both learners with advanced language skill and learners in need of language skill development (English). The curricula took into consideration their field of specialisation, namely Bachelor in Social Work and Bachelor in Arts. The selection of the contents for their texts and the class work exercises were designed keeping their subject orientation in mind and also to facilitate intrinsic growth.
The third step was to evolve a teaching learning and evaluation process. The typical teaching learning session involved independent learning with teacher as facilitator, and peer group learning. Peer group learning promoted group dynamics where there was space for empathy, motivation, social processes of interdependent learning environment and leadership role play. This process created an atmosphere conducive for teaching/ learning as also in aiding continuous assessment and

“Teaching is a collaborative process that requires cooperation, support and teamwork for the benefit of students” (Magill). At times competition can be good for an individual to show off what he or she have in them, but when it comes to teaching students, competition can go
The pain and agony due to the fact that I might not be prepared for college class was on my shoulders. Since day one of highschool, my biggest desire throughout school was to be engaged in learning while being well prepared for the next step in life: college. What class was the answer to this class desired? It was in a meeting with my guidance counselor in eighth grade that struck me and sparked the interest in my heart to do well. All of my highschool career I have never known what it actually meant to do well and be ¨successful.¨
The purpose of group learning and development is to ensure that all learning styles are catered for and the ultimate goal of sharing knowledge is achieved. When using a group to deliver something new each individual can call on a fellow participant to confirm understanding. 1.2 Explain why delivery of learning and development must reflect group dynamics When delivering to a group it is important to consider, what is the normal behaviour within the group? Who plays what role?
Cooperative learning model is an active process where students work in small teams/groups, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Students have opportunities to actively participate in their learning, question and challenge each other, share and discuss their ideas, and adopt their learning. Ross and Smyth (1995) describe successful cooperative learning tasks as intellectually demanding, creative, open-ended, and involve higher order thinking tasks. In this model, it is essential to create a positive climate where interpersonal skills can be promoted so that positive emotions will be fostered among learners. Cooperative learning also helps the learners to feel empowered and respected to prepare them to face real
The United States is a place of freedom. We are a mixing pot that unifies as one. Many religions, cultures, and languages make their home in the Unites States. Many foreigners see the U.S. as an opportunity to seek better lives and education, but when it comes to foreigners and native-born non-English speakers that do not yet know English, it becomes a little more difficult to go about an average day let alone make a better future. Children in school often become English Language Learners, or ELL, to assimilate to the American standards.
Seven principles of social work (Biestek, 1957) – confidentiality, self-determination, individualization, acceptance, non-judgmental attitude, purposeful expression of feeling and controlled emotional involvement – set good norms for me to handle service users. Furthermore, the basic training of social workers could equip me well in handling individual’s needs in case and group work settings. These skills are useful in launching project in CCD. Moreover, I must do reflections frequently and beware my role consciously in promoting CCD work because conflicts inevitably occurs during facing a group of participants with distinct background, interests and needs. Besides, if I want to be a worker using this CCD approach, macro social work’s value, knowledge and skills are needed to acquire to facilitate it, for instance, BBO, anti-oppression model, community economic development model and community building.
Most Efficient forms of the learning process: - Acc. to Lewin, learning is best facilitated in an environment where there is dialectic tension and conflict between immediate, concrete experience and analytic detachment. By bringing together the immediate experiences of the trainees and the conceptual models of the staff in an open atmosphere where inputs from each perspective could challenge and stimulate the other, a learning environment occurred with remarkable vitality and creativity. (Kolb.) Pillars of an efficient learning mechanism in group settings:- o Feedback:-There was a concern that organizations, groups and relationships generally suffered from a lack of accurate information about what was happening around their performance. Feedback became a key ingredient of T-groups and was found to ‘be most effective when it stemmed from here-and-now observations, when it followed the generating event as closely as possible, and when the recipient checked with other group members to establish its validity and reduce perceptual distortion’ (Yalom 1995: 489). o Unfreezing:-This was taken directly from Kurt Lewin’s change theory.
Considering that, the situation is difficult, as the object of social help is personality that is understood as a unique and solid system which is dynamic in itself. So the social worker in the process of social help encounters himself with the challenge to help a person to primarily restore his worthiness which would let him to solve his problems and not, conversely, resign and live with them. Yet the social work actually still impresses with its aspirations more than with concrete and tangible achievements or prestige (Kavaliauskienė, 2005). The objective of a social worker is noble, but often he confronts himself with unsolvable tasks. This situation raises because of the twofold orientation of social work: on one hand, it is directed towards a person, but on the other hand, to the society; that is, the direction goes towards a whole and towards its part – the community and the individual – by trying to reach their interaction and consistency.
When I began this course, in my understanding the purpose of social work was improving the physical environment of individual as in a micro level and to also promote the justice of society as in a macro level. As my learning about this profession continued to process, my ideas of social work purpose have expanded. According to the purpose for this profession which is defined by The National Association of Social Workers, the mission is to " promote or restore a mutually beneficial interaction between individuals and society in order to improve the quality of life for everyone" (Dubois, 2004), Thus far, my journey through the different courses at COSTAATT has yielded magnificent knowledge in the field. As I continued without prejudice,
I can consider my professional development experience in two parts: Before I became a teacher and after I became a teacher. During my teacher education at university I used to imagine myself as the teacher of that lesson and I used to try to draw some tips for my future job. I observed my teachers’ way of teaching, their rapport with students and their reactions. I always commented on why or why not they behave in that specific way and search for examples to be applied in my future job as a teacher. I believe that these observations provided me with some valuable and conclusive clues for my job.
(1995) conducted a study about Collaborative Learning Enhances Critical Thinking, The idea of Collaborative learning in, the gathering and blending of Students with the end goal of accomplishing a scholastic objective, has been generally inquired about and pushed all through the expert writing. The expression "Collaborative learning" refers to a guideline technique in which Students at different execution levels cooperate in little groupings toward a shared objective. The students are in charge of each other 's learning and also on their own. Along these lines, the achievement of one Student causes different Students to be
With every study, there is a format that the tutor provides to the students and forms the basis of the feedback that the student provides to the tutor. Consequently, the study as an assignment is one of the channels of feedback initiated by the tutor where the student provides feedback in the form of written work or a presentation. It is from the presentation that the tutor then provides a feedback on the extent of the importance of the communication between the
It is one of the most effective forms of learning. Working in isolation is very restrictive and gives a slow progress. Critical thinking is also encouraged when learners work in groups. Through collaborative activities such as writing, debates, group projects and more they learn to work together and to respect each other contribution. The traditional relationship between student and teacher is changed with collaborative learning.
