Introduction
English has become the global language and over the past few decades the number of people speaks English as a second language is growing rapidly and has exceed the number of the native speakers. In the 20th century, English plays an important role in the global economic, technological, cultural, and scientific developments. It is also important to the internationalization of higher education. Since English has such an important place in the world, it plays an important role as a global language and has a significant impact on language education policies (Nunan, 2003). Language is interconnected with a country 's national self-image and the image to be showed to the world. According to Carroll, language policy includes all kind of contribution by government including the language education and raising the

The number of English speakers in Asia has exceeded 350 million, which is about the same number of people who live in countries where English is the native language. Many countries in Asia consider it as a major national policy to strengthen the nation’s communication skill in English. Asian countries are very initiative in promoting English to their people and for their national interests. Countries such as Japan, South Korea (Korea, hereafter), and China, are revising their national education system as they all can see the importance of English as a global language. In some Asian countries, English started to be taught in elementary schools and even as early as in kindergarten rather than in secondary schools. The reason for early introduction of English is because they believe children learn English as a second language in an early age will have a higher
Years after this mentality is taught, it will stick with the students and improve their outlook on the world. In Mrs. Hamma’s class, teaching basic English to immigrants will help improve their speaking abilities as well as improve their social standing. Joseph Fong, a Chinese immigrant taking the course, presented to the class his reason for taking the class. He says “I taking the course in Basic English to speak good and improve my position better in this country” (Mohr 197). At this moment in time, clearly, he is not proficient in speaking English.
Ansari 1 Roshanak Ansari Professor Covington English 1101 November 23, 2017 Final Research Paper Over the past decade, the United States has become more diverse in different nationalities and cultures. If American high schools were to offer more options in foreign languages for the students to choose from, there would be an increase in their IQ’s and they would have better career opportunities. Some of the benefits of being bilingual or knowing another foreign language besides your mother tongue are better health, new and improved job opportunities and it can also improve your competitiveness in the job market.
The debate between supporters of Pro-Bilingual Education and Pro-English Education is a battle that will stand the test of time. In recent years, it has become a politicized dispute and is no longer just a language issue. It has become an issue of culture. English will continue to be the dominant language of the United States, but the population of LEP students will continue to grow.
Language can be defined as, “the learned system of arbitrary vocal symbols, by means of which human beings, as members of a society, interact and communicate in terms of their culture" (Leap 209). Language is not just the words a person chooses to speak. Language is much deeper. Language ties many different generations together and that is how people can share history. Unfortunately, “the profile of Indian language fluency among the adult members of a tribal community rarely predicts how familiar with the language the younger members of the tribe will be” (Vizenor 218).
Historically, empires without a common, unifying language have failed to endure the test of time and remain unified. For example, the Romans could not effectively create a central administration “that could cut across regional societies and language groups” (Stearn’s xxx). Later, Europeans developed centralized political systems “by building nation states,” meaning the continent was divided between different regional languages and societies. With its increasingly elevated concentration of foreign, non-English speaking immigrants, the United States is threatened by the same fate of the Romans: a non-unified, divided nation. For this reason, language should be legislated in the United States in order to more easily assimilate minorities into the population, equip them with the
Linguistic Ethnography Everything that I know from the magnificent and beautiful language of English, I owe it all to the biggest person I know and love, my mom. I was born in a traditional puerto rican family. Which meant that all my family only knew Spanish with the minimum abilities in the English language. To be precise only my mother and a few of my cousins were the ones that could defense them self in English.
(Garcia, 2013). So I agree with this, children in order to be accepted in the culture of the country they are living they choose to speak only English, to feel part of the
Another reason for foreign languages to be taught in elementary schools is that for children, the process of learning a language is a bit different than that of older students. Children tend to learn a language more quickly
Most of the world now requires individuals to speak English. The language is so common that most continents’ institutions are putting English into their curriculums. However, some places have put English as their second language. These countries are falling behind as the world is advancing. Eventually, they will lose contact with the rest of the English speaking world.
Speaking English becomes one of substantial ability for people nowadays that can be one of causes I have studied in Canada. People are exposed many field where they should use English language when people are surfing internet, reading original major program books even meeting foreign people in work places. These reasons are that why I have learned English since elemental school student in Korea; nevertheless, my English ability was struggled. Since, they taught to focus on only English grammar not practical speaking. Consequently, I decided to come to Canada.
During the semester, I wrote the summary and response, the rhetorical analysis and the argument essay. Personally I feel that I benefitted most from the summary and response because it was the longest summary and response I have written. I used to write only one-paragraph summary and response. Therefore, writing a long summary and response taught me so many things. Besides, the rhetorical analysis and the argument easy helped me a lot.
However, many kids learn to speak another language, beside English, at home from their parents. Sometimes, it is the primary language. The primary language could be learned before English. Foreign languages should be required at elementary schools because it helps the students become more culturally diverse, students get more opportunities and foreign language can helps students relate to other students better.
“You can’t see other people’s point of view when you have only one language,” declared psycholinguist, Frank Smith. Just as it is mentioned in this quote, foreign language is important; therefore, people should learn a foreign language at an early age. When learning a foreign language at an early age, it helps people to concentrate and increase comprehension skills. Also, at a young age, the mind is fresh, so the person can take in more information and can easily master a foreign language. In addition, most secondary schools, universities, and jobs require a foreign language to be known.
