How Has The English Language Influenced India? For various reasons English has got the status of global language. Today about 300 million people speak English as their first language and another 350 million use it as a second language. It is the official or semi-official language in more than 60 countries. The main reason why English is so important is mainly due to the political and economic power the British used to have in the world. Between 17th and early 20th century Britain 's imperial power was at its peak in the countries it had colonized. This power led to the rapid spread of the English language. India has the largest youth population in the world and, as you might expect, the main users of Hinglish can be found within this age group. The reason for the widespread use of Hinglish among the youth is due to the growing popularity of the English language as a result of globalisation. One place where Hinglish is frequently used is in the Bollywood film industry, which strives of young cinema-goers. In these Bollywood movies you will often hear characters switching between the two languages. There’s also been a recent trend with Bollywood film titles to use a combination of the two languages. A good grasp of the English language is beneficial especially to the elite in India. After their high school education they often choose to move either to Canada, America or the UK to attend university. The preference of English language by the rich has caused many problems over the years for the poor and uneducated in India. The sad truth is that many Indians are unable to do simple things like read the label of their medication, comprehend the government document officiating your driver’s license or filing your taxes. This problem has led to the elite and middle classes sending their children to English private schools while the vast poor send their children to the government schools where the medium of teaching is Hindi and not English. Another problem is that universities and even government jobs require fluency in English, as mandated by the ruling elite. Therefore, a person’s socioeconomic status in Indian society is approximately in line with his or her fluency in English language. In other words: a new type of caste
