In this scenario, when Johnny first asks Ken, “does your friend have to stay here all the time?” , he is coming off rather strong and it is catching Ken off guard since Johnny is not being fully clear about his question to Ken, therefore, Ken is more likely to respond negatively and defensively. After Ken responds, Johnny gives a vague response and does not provide and reasons why he changed his mind. Johnny’s reply is also a high level abstract language response and it makes it hard for Ken to understand how Johnny is feeling and what he is going through.
My experience in English 1010 was great. My writing skills were very poor at the beginning of the semester. I did not know how to write correct sentence structure. I had great difficulties making my sentences flow smoothly and clearly. I was not able to edit a paragraph for mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
“If the English language made any sense, lackadaisical would have something to do with a shortage of flowers.” -Doug Larson. Most students would agree that college is difficult. Classes are more involved and studying is more important than ever. It is not surprising that students often end up asking the instructor how they can improve their grade right before the end of the quarter.
I learned about thinking intentionally through AP English Language and Composition class. From the beginning of class, we talked about intentionality, both in reading and writing. Reading intentionally means that you are thinking and questioning about how the writer uses that word, phrase, or syntax to build its argument, whereas writing intentionally refers to you are questioning yourself why you choose that word, phrase, or syntax to persuade your audience. In the past two months, I started to think of how the diction build up the tone of the writer, how each sentence and paragraph work rhetorically, and how all these elements together persuade the audience. For example, I would look at the syntax structure.
There are a rising number of students living in the United States that are classified as English Language Learners or ELLs. These students are not only learning grade-level content but also learning how to communicate in English. The majority (77.2 percent) come from Spanish speaking countries in Latin America. Latino ELL students are typically enrolled in schools that do not have experience serving this special population.
In the very beginning of English 101, I was informed that homework will be daily and intense. Be prepared for class counted as participation grade, as well as speaking in class. I thought my papers needed to be up to the standards at the beginning of class because the syllabus set certain concerns by the way it was phrased. I was expected to summit my daily assignments on time and improve on my writing as the semester went by, and I was overwhelmed by such responsibility. That was how I first came into realization of my expectations that were needed to be met in order for me to pass the class.
Whenever I think about what I have learned since the beginning of this course—English 101, It always gives me a great pleasure to tell myself and people around me that I have learned something great; something that can make me a better writer. However, I have learned some writing skills based on the course’s teaching learning objectives that can help me in my future courses. Also, I’m glad, because my strength in writing essays have increased. Most especially, writing narrative essay in MLA formatting. I might not be an excellent writer, but I know I have not stopped learning, and I know I will get pay-off in the long run if I can keep the ongoing pace of my learning—guaranteed.
My favorite subject has always been english, I was never a fan of math, especially when it came to high school and college. My english teachers in high school did not helped me at all. They never taught us how to write a thesis, how to organize our ideas and how to improve our vocabulary. All the teachers would do is assigned a book to read and write a paper on what it was about. We never got the chance to write about a topic we were interested in or talk about our opinions on a certain topic.
This is similar to what I am researching. This would be considered an authoritative source for my topic because it is a journal in a book that is collected in order to be a critical sourcebook. I am not quite sure of biases might the author have but there is a large section of references at the end of the chapter and the author talks solely about Black culture. This has to do with black identities influenced by hip hop. The texts examines Black stylized English (BSE) and Black English (BE) which is found in music such as Hip Hop, rap, R&B, and reggae.
As children learn they learn through experience, with each new experience they are learning about people, places, objects, and events. Through these experiences, they learn language. In your response,
Language skills Language skill is one of the milestone achievements of the first two years of life. Children are born with innate schema of communication, such as body language or facial expression to communicate with parents or caregiver. The acquisition of language starts from phonology, which is an important skill for a child to master where he or she is to absorb the sound and identify the sounds form one language to another. This was nurtured both at home and in school where Alexander has to absorb sounds from native (Cantonese) and foreign languages (English).
a. Vocabulary (Remember that these words should be important to text content.) Which 2 or 3 words should you stress for receptive vocabulary (keeping Tier 3 words in mind)? Briefly explain why.
Language acquisition, what is it? How does it promote Critical Literacy skills in Deaf children? Language acquisitions is the process of procuring or adopting “a firmly established first language” (Mayer, 2007, p. 5). There is a direct correlation between the early acquisition of a language, and a child’s ability later in literacy, “linguistic competence” (Small & Cripps, 2003, p. 4), and other developmental and cognitive abilities. This critical time when a child should have access to his or her first language “takes place most naturally and successfully in the first few years of life” (Humphries et al., 2014, p. 34), and a child’s “early experiences [of language access] correlate with [his or her] competencies in language and literacy” (Mayer, 2007, p. 1).
This innate system equips all children with a knowledge of this universal grammar. This predisposed knowledge allows them to acquire vocabulary and construct utterances of the language that they are hearing into sentences, so they hold the ability to understand the meaning of the language that they are hearing. From a nativist perspective, language acquisition is a natural human development and is automatic to all humans if they are provided and surrounded with sufficient linguistic information for them to
Research Questions From the literature review, it was established that there were several factors affecting language learning and acquisition. More specifically, it was revealed that factors such as exposure at an early age, motivation, attitudes, incentives and educational system can influence language acquisition. However, most of the research were conducted in the west and were focused on students as subjects to the study and foreigners working in the country where they need to learn the language to lengthen their range of employment opportunity.
